We were delighted to welcome an international group of students on Sunday who are at a summer school in Manchester. They were from Japan,Bolivia,Chile,Peru,Italy ,Spain,France,Switzerland and Germany. Apologies if I missed anybody or any country out , They just had to have their picture with the London bus courtesy of International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival and I suspect there will be several families the world over somewhat confused as to why this bus was in Buxton.
After a guided tour of the town we provided a guided commentary aboard their coach and a great hike through Monsal Dale. We even included a wonderful tour of Magpie Mine and our thanks to Peak District Mines Historical Society

I will be offering a tour called Women of Note on the 1 August from Buxton Opera house at 10.30 am and have some spaces. This tour will include details about Anna Seward, the Georgian poet, Anne Lister aka Gentleman Jack, Vera Brittain and Ottoline Morrell . The tour will last approximately 2 hours and costs £15. I will not be making numerous costume changes like our brilliant actors but will be giving voice to a little of their rich stories and relationship to Buxton.

Damn Pigeons
Several people have commented on the sad state of the children’s well and have suggested that the dressings have suffered an act of vandalism. In a way they have BUT the vandals are pigeons who are after the sunflower seeds used in the creation of the Buxton Well Dressing and Carnival !l
So sorry for the children from the community school who worked so hard to produce such excellent well dressings.

A rainbow and a smorgasbord of delights Buxton Fringe delivers

Amid the wealth of theatre, comedy and music, it is easy to overlook some of the impressive events in the smaller categories at this year’s Buxton Fringe (July 3-21).
Dancing On the Spot brings a Swing Dance Lesson all the way from Chicago as part of the Fringe’s Dance line-up which also includes an ambitious Day of Dance with sides from around the country brought together by Chapel en le Frith Morris
Buxton Film and Buxton Opera House are back with Buxton Shorts, a collection of short films from makers with a connection to Buxton and the Peak District. Brief Encounter Duo are meanwhile presenting 1929 silent film, Piccadilly, with live musical accompaniment featuring a whopping nine instruments.
Street Theatre focuses on the local whether it is Buxton Our Street’s fascinating self-guided audio tour of Buxton and its ghosts, or Discover Buxton two promenade performances: Miss Lillian Violet Bowdine Entertains examining the history of theatre in Buxton in the company of an Edwardian actor, and S*x and Sensibility revealing how Anne Lister (aka Gentleman Jack) kept a secret diary including a three month stay in Buxton The multi-award-winning The Shakespeare Jukebox from Buxton Drama League will be hard to miss as they throw themselves into Shakespearean scenes chosen by the audience on the Pavilion Gardens Promenade for five nights.
Regular Fringe goers will know that there are always some events that defy categorisation. This year And More… includes two magic shows - An Evening of Close Up Magic and Mentalism from High Peak Magic Circle and Caspar Thomas: The Art of Close-Up Magic - both offering mind-boggling entertainment.
Also in this section of the programme, High Peak Pride popular Pride Picnic offers a fun-filled afternoon of LGBTQIA+ laughter and friendship with plans afoot for an afterparty at Buxton Brewery Bars Cellar Bar. and Serpentine Community Garden , also the host for the Fringe Awards, presents Summer Bizarre, a fun outdoor event with flower show, music, crafts, games… and even more.

I love Buxton Well Dressing and Carnival and for years it has been part of our family traditions. Forty years ago at the Jackson’s farm in Burbage we would decorate a float. Then we would join with the rest of the family at my Mother’s house on West Rd. The Billarettes would stop and dance near the Baker’s Arm’s and later the kids we go to the fair on the market place.
The street of the Well dressing Queen would be decorated with pride. This year this wonderful tradition continues due to the hard work of local families such as the Gould’s and Kitchen’s
Please support them again this year with a slight change. The preparation of the wells will now take place at St John’s from 1-4 July and the Wells will be up from Friday 5th July.
Do support them and please share your memories an£ traditions of the day here.

It's English Tourism Week this week and, this year, it's highlighting what tourism and tourism-businesses bring to communities.

At Discover Buxton, we believe it's people who make a place. This is why we use characters from the town's past to tell its story, to bring its history to life.

We love the town and we hope that you feel we bring something to Buxton.
