Tomorrow nights talk at The Buxton Georgian Festival

Live Talk: Country House Visiting in the Georgian Age with Dr Peter Collinge.

Thursday 26th September 2024 - 7pm - The Pump Room, Buxton.

Tickets £12 per person available via the Pump Room or the website link below. Booking advisable.

Dr Peter Collinge provides an entertaining guide to the pleasures and pitfalls of visiting country houses in the Georgian era.
He draws on a wealth of contemporary evidence, including letters, journals and guide books. Set within the wider context of eighteenth-century tourism, access arrangements, encounters with owners and servants, hospitality, and mistimed visits come to life through the expectations, experiences and opinionated reactions of those who sought entry to the grandest homes in the land.

Dr Peter Collinge is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He is a research assistant at the Open University. His publications on social and economic conditions in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries include Georgian businesswomen; the poor laws; and health, leisure and tourism. In 2023, he published ‘Gloomy Inhospitality: limiting access to houses and country estates‘.
