Hazel Cottages

Hazel Cottages Hazel Cottages provide two self-catering holiday cottages in the beautiful Peak District - based in Earl Sterndale, Buxton, Derbyshire. Hazel and Andrew

The history of Earl Sterndale dates back to 1244 with the mention of Stenredile, meaning ‘stony valley.’ By 1330, it was known as Erlisstenerdale, which developed into Earl Sterndale. In the days of William the Conqueror, the land was given to Henry de Ferrers, Earl of Derby who established the present village of Earl Sterndale. Since 1614, The Duke of Devonshire has been Lord of the Manor. The

Cottage was once the bakery for Earl Sterndale, and Lilac Cottage was the bakehouse and flour store for the bakery. Both cottages are built of stone quarried locally; quarrying, lead mining and agriculture have sustained the local economy. Fast forward to 2017 and 2018, Hazel now runs the former bakery and bakehouse - Lilac Cottage and The Cottage, respectively, offering pet-friendly, cosy accommodation for walkers and families looking to explore the Peak District. We look forward to your stay.
