Another great place to explore is Ogwen Valley and Llyn Ogwen. It is just a short drive away from our cottages and a great place to go hiking.
There are at least three Welsh lakes that claim to contain Arthur’s magical sword, Excalibur (Caledfwlch in the early Welsh tales), which the mighty king is said to have cast into the depths after he was mortally wounded. The lakes of Llydaw, Dinas and Ogwen are equally beautiful, and they’re all close together in the heart of the Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park. Surely one of them is bound to be the right one? Just a short 5 minute drive away from our cottages is the World Herritage Site of Caernarfon Castle.
Castell Caernarfon is recognised around the world as one of the greatest buildings of the Middle Ages.
This fortress-palace on the banks of the River Seiont is grouped with Edward I’s other castles at Conwy, Beaumaris and Harlech as a World Heritage Site. But for sheer scale and architectural drama Caernarfon stands alone.
Here Edward and his military architect Master James of St George erected a castle, town walls and a quay all at the same time. This gigantic building project eventually took 47 years and cost a staggering £25,000.
The castle was born out of bitter war with Welsh princes. So of course its immense curtain walls and daunting King’s Gate were designed to withstand assault. But the polygonal towers, eagle statues and multi-coloured masonry sent a more subtle message.
These echoed imperial Roman architecture, especially the walls of Constantinople. They also recalled the Welsh myth of Macsen Wledig, who dreamed of a great fort at the mouth of a river – ‘the fairest that man ever saw’.
So Caernarfon is a castle of dreams. A legend brought to life. Even after 700 years it still stirs the imagination like no other Welsh castle.

There are so many adventures right on our doorstp in North Wales. One of our favourite places to visit is Llanddwyn Island. During the summer months you will find a family of wild horses on the island and it offers you daily opportunities to see incredible wildlife.
The island can actually be seen from afar from Plas Dinas Country House, where you will collect your keys for your chosen cottage.
The island is certainly a must to add to the north wales bucket list, but do watch the tide times.

The cottage is ideally located to explore this beautiful area of North Wales where adventure awaits. It is located at the entrance to Plas Dinas Country House, the former home of Lord Snowdon and is now our home, our hotel, our life. We adore it.

We simply ask for a £100 non-refundable depsoit to secure with the final balance due 48 hours prior. We do welcome well behaved dogs without additional charge in the cottages.
