Local History - Bryn Bras Castle
Many of you will have passed under the castle archway approaching Bryntegs entrance, which gives a magical feel to the start of your holiday, rich in welsh character.🏰 But do you know the history?

Hidden beneath the now overgrown forest are vast grounds filled with intrigue. Built between 1829 and 1835 by the renowned architect Thomas Hopper, who also built Penryn Castle in Bangor around the same time period.

The property was built as a personal residence for Thomas Williams a cultured Welsh speaking attorney at law, and his wife Lauretta Maria.

Over the years it has been host to many distinguished guests, such as Edward Prince of Wales 👑 shown in the group photo taken in 1925. Later, Edward VIII and Duke of Windsor, and the Prime Minister of the time David Lloyd George, have stayed here, particularly when it was the home of the millionaire Duncan Elliot Alves (1870-1947). The Castle has been used for television films, documentaries and features plus being mentioned in numerous articles in newspapers, magazines and books.

In recent years the grade 2* listed castle has been privately owned by the same family for the last 60 years! Unfortunately, it is no longer open to the public and we advise everyone to be respectful and not to venture into the grounds.

Bryn Bras is still a staple of the local area and remains to add to the charm of Brynteg, which is why its tied into our park logo.
