During in 1848 Princess Louise was born. The fourth daughter of Queen Victoria, she became the Duchess of Argyll through marriage in 1871. She was also an artist, feminist, and philanthropist in her own right. The impact of her twin passions of the arts and philanthropy can be seen throughout the history of Dunoon around the twentieth century. ✨

Princess Louise was particularly active in raising funds for the Dunoon Convalescent Homes, and opened a Glaswegian grand bazaar that raised £6,000 for the cause in 1871. She also made a number of purchases from the stalls there. Princess Louise visited the Homes alongside the Duke of Argyll the following year, and witnessed for herself the great work this fundraising had done for the Homes. She then became their patron, with a ward named in her honour. Princess Louise also opened a bazaar for the Dunoon Cottage Hospital in the Castle Gardens in 1905, and opened the hospital itself three years later. 🔑

Her dedication to the arts is shown through her opening of the original Dunoon Pavilion, seen in the image below. She stated that she had the ‘great pleasure’ of celebrating this magnificent building, and wished it ‘every success.’ A talented painter and sculptor, Princess Louise designed the Argyll Shield for the Cowal Highland Gathering. The competition for this was hailed as the ‘outstanding attraction’ of the Gathering in 1906. 🏆

Although her positions meant that she fulfilled engagements around the world, it is clear that the people and places of Dunoon were important to Princess Louise. She had used these positions to draw attention to the issues she cared about- with this passion and her visits reportedly well-received by the townspeople. 👑

Now the weather has turned more typically “West Coast!” It’s worth mentioning that our extension is now totally water tight! Although in need of some finishing aesthetic touches, it provides some very pleasant in-door seating for those wet, windy and in-between days while still providing wonderful views of our surroundings! We hope the weather is sunny and settled for your visit but when it’s not, we’ve quite literally, got you covered! 😊

A few more words from ASSC, CEO, Fiona Campbell as she responds to the Edinburgh Judicial Review Case:

"In what was the largest Crowdfunding effort in Scottish legal history, I pay tribute to the determination of the four petitioners as well as the many small business owners who donated to the cause.

"We now know that Edinburgh Council’s licensing policy is unlawful regarding their rebuttable presumption against granting a STL licence and contravenes The Provision of Service Regulations.

"However, this should not be viewed solely as a matter for the Council as the decision has profound implications for the Scottish Government’s licensing policy. Indeed, we believe it seriously calls into question whether the licensing can survive in its current form.

"We believe the Scottish Government needs to go back to the drawing board and constructively engage with industry to devise a regulatory framework that works for all.

"The ASSC will be requesting an urgent meeting with Scottish Ministers.

"The self-catering sector is worth £876m per annum to the Scottish economy, benefiting local communities throughout the country, and the time to act is now."
