Did you know we run our tours rain or shine? โ˜€๏ธโ˜”๏ธ

As we are in the middle of cold, rainy, and wintery weather we wanted to give you some tips for when you join us on a tour!

๐ŸŒ‚ Come prepared! While Cambridge is one of the driest places in the UK, we still get a lot of rain! Make sure you have a good umbrella or rain coat with you.

๐ŸงคLayer up! All of our tours through the city center are about an hour and a half in length, that's a long time to be in the cold! In the winter, we recommend wearing gloves, scarves, and hats to keep you toasty ๐Ÿ”ฅ

In the US and Canada, both countries have already had thanksgiving โ€” holidays deeply associated with establishing settler colonialism.

For Indigenous peoples in both countries, there is a growing attempt to acknowledge the origins of the holidays and to highlight Indigenous peoples and their experiences.

What does this have to do with us? We prioritize highlighting uncomfortable and hidden histories for marginalized groups in Oxford, Cambridge, and York. To that end, we are looking to find more stories of Indigenous peoplesโ€™ (in the Americas and beyond) who had travelled/lived/attended Oxford, Cambridge, and York.

In this post, weโ€™re featuring two such people:

Dr. Oronhyatekha, Mohawk physician and first known Indigenous person to attend Oxford.

Mฤkereti Papakura, Te Arawa and Tลซhourangi iwi. Ethnographer and former Oxford Student.

Do you know anymore Indigenous people who attended Oxford or Cambridge? Lived in York?

What do you know about Cambridge and Colonialism?

Find out more about the connection Cambridge has with colonialism and Empire on our Cambridge and Colonialism tour. On this walking tour of Cambridge, we explore the complex historical ties between the university, its benefactors, and Britain's colonial past. Learn how Cambridgeโ€™s architecture, scholars, and institutions were deeply influenced by the wealth and ideas derived from imperial expansion.

Discover stories of resistance, exploitation, and the current ways in which the university and its museums continue to reckon with its colonial history. Led by current researchers at the university, this tour offers a critical perspective on Cambridgeโ€™s role in shaping global narratives and power structures, past and present.

For our last Black History Month post, we want to highlight some people who are working to shape the lives of Black students and citizens at Cambridge in the present and future!

Stormzy, a British rapper, singer, and songwriter, has initiated a Stormzy Scholarship program. Since 2018, his foundation has been offering funding to Black UK home students at the University.

Stormzy is just one example of many people and groups working to shape Black history. For some of our posts this past month, and in our tours, we rely on the work of the Black Cantabs, a group who's aim is to put Black students in the University's past, present, and future. Other posts have depend on families and communities coming together to make sure stories and spaces are remembered.

As the month comes to a close, we hope that you remember that Black history doesn't end in October.

This week for Black History Month, we're highlighting stories of the firsts in the town and the University!

๐Ÿป๐Ÿก Albert Gordon - He is the first Black pub owner in Cambridge. Albert immigrated to England in the 1960 from Jamaica. He would end up running the Midland Tavern on Devonshire rd, which quickly became a community hub and space. People from all backgrounds would gather, including from the LGBTQ+ community and Irish labourers. The pub remains a space for community still!

๐Ÿ–Š๐Ÿ“œ Alexander Crummell - Alexander Crummell is the first fully recorded Black student to attend Cambridge, meaning we have both his matriculation and graduation records. He went to Englang in 1847 and would graduate from Wueens in 1853. He was, and woudl remain, an influential abolitionist and thinker. Today, he is the only Black student to have attended Cambridge that has a portrait in the Vice Chancellor's office. You can learn more about Crummell's legacy on our Original Tour!
