The latest data set has now been added to the Go Matilda Parent Visas calculator, which can be accessed here: https://www.gm-parent-visas.com/visa-processing-time-calculator/

As the preparation of the calculator involves costs (we have to pay the Department for the raw data, which then needs to be turned into a spreadsheet and input to the back end behind the website) we are considering ways of recovering these costs.

This might be by introducing a charge for all who aren't clients of Go Matilda Visas to access the calculator, or requesting names and email addresses so we can send information about our trusted associates and from whom we receive introducer fees.

Feedback from those of you who find the calculator of use will be much appreciated.

Welcome to Go Matilda Parent Visas and our Contributory Parent visa processing time calculator. When you enter your details into the calculator and the estimated number of visas you think will be granted each year the calculator will give an indication of when you can expect your visa to be granted....

The deadline for appointing a registered tax agent and securing an extension of the 31st October 2023 for filing your personal 2023 Australian tax return is now only 5 weeks away.

If you want more time to prepare and submit your 2023 Australian tax return you should be on a registered tax agent's lodgment program by the end of October 2023.
Doing this can also push back the due date for paying any tax owing to the Australian Taxation Office - so if you have untaxed income from a source such as a positively geared rental property or a capital gain from the disposal of a property or shares you are likely to benefit from appointing a registered tax agent.

bdh Tax is a registered tax agent (number 2569 1979) and prepares UK and Australian tax returns for individuals who have income in both countries. If you would like a free initial chat and a no obligation fee quote please contact us - complete the enquiry form here or telephone the nearest office to you : https://www.bdhtax.com/contact/

We'll be delighted to help.

Today we're looking at business skills visas.

The details we have from the Department of Home Affairs indicates there are nearly 20,000 applications for subclass 188 provisional visas, of which 14,000 are applications made by business owners.

In the case of the 14,000 applications made by business owners these are applications made by individuals who are required to set up or acquire a business in Australia and to run it for at least 2 years before they apply for permanent residency under subclass 888.

Being business owners the applicants are - as a rule - entrepreneurial, risk takers, and employers of Australian citizens and permanent residents.

So what does the Australian Government do in response to these applicants?

It reduces the number of visas to be granted in the program year to 30 June 2024 to 1,900 from 5,000 - meaning some applications will take nearly 10 years to be granted.

Is this the message we want to send to risk taking business owners who want to move to Australia? Surely not!

Australia’s “broken” migration system encourages 1.8 million guest workers to be “permanently temporary” due to strict caps on permanent migration, a landmark review has found.

The migration review, to be released on Thursday by the home affairs minister, Clare O’Neil, calls for “major reform”, warning that fixing Australia’s migration system “cannot be achieved by further tinkering and incrementalism”.

While it is still unclear how much of the review the Albanese government will adopt, a section released before O’Neil’s appearance at the National Press Club indicated it would be pushed to ditch skills lists, allow more workers in caring occupations and tackle long wait times for family visas.

Changes to family reunion, skills recognition, and regional migration policies have been flagged ahead of the government’s release of its much-anticipated Migration Review.

The government's Migration Review report states Australia’s migration system is “outdated” and does not meet Australia’s current or future skills needs, calling for a “long term and holistic” approach.

The government is downplaying concerns over a massive rush of 650,000 migrants across the next two years, but experts have delivered a grim warning of a “major problem” for most Australians.

Australia is set to welcome more than 650,000 additional migrants over this financial year and next, raising concerns of an emerging housing crisis.

Onshore migrants living anywhere in Melbourne can now apply for the Skilled Work Regional visa that allows skilled migrants to live and work in regional Victoria.

In a significant move to fulfil the remaining places allocated for its skilled visa nomination program for 2022-2023, Victoria has opened its skilled work regional visa (Subclass 491) to applicants living and/or working in metropolitan Melbourne.

A major review into the nation’s immigration program will urge the Albanese government to remove a blanket requirement that employers put out job advertisements before recruiting skilled migrants.

Under the plan, the rule would be replaced by an independent assessment to determine where there are skills shortages, in a bid to stop Australia losing top-end talent to rival destinations.

Employers want jobs lists that decide which skilled migrants can come to Australia to be scrapped for high-income earners to give businesses an edge in the global race for talent.

Business groups and experts say the lists are outdated, fail to identify future job gaps and create unnecessarily onerous layers of bureaucracy.

Australia's 2022-23 Migration Program will be vastly different to the 2021-22 program, not just in size but also in composition.

The 2022-23 program has been increased to 195,000 after the 2021-22 program was delivered at 143,556 places — some 16,500 less than the planning level of 160,000.

The planned composition of Labor's 2022-23 Migration Program has a significantly larger skill stream — at 142,500, it will be the biggest in our history.

Australia’s permanent migration intake will be increased by 35,000 places and visa processing times will be turbocharged with $36.1 million to fund hundreds of extra staff in Tuesday’s federal budget.

The increase will bring the permanent migration rate for 2022-23 to 195,000 places, which includes an additional 9000 places for regional visas within the skill stream for a total of 34,000.

The number of state and territory visas will also see a massive increase from 11,200 last year to 31,000 this year.

Post-study work rights for international students will also be extended from two to four years for bachelor’s degrees, three to five years for master’s degrees, and four to six years for PhDs.

Australia's visa backlog must be reduced to ensure the nation can remain competitive on a global scale, the immigration minister says, as he revealed the government has made progress in tackling the "massive" problem.

In a speech at the Migration Institute of Australia National Conference in Hobart on Wednesday, Andrew Giles revealed the visa backlog now sits at around 880,000 applications.

That's down from almost 1 million non-humanitarian applications before the federal election, which was held in May. The backlog was labelled "massive" by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese
not long after Labor won government.

The immigration minister has revealed where the visa backlog now stands. Here's how the government plans to further tackle the issue.
