What do you know about Peterhouse, Cambridge? Here are 3 intriguing facts about Cambridge's oldest College 👇

1️⃣ Peterhouse was founded in 1284 by Hugo de Balsham, Bishop of Ely, and granted its charter by King Edward I 📜

2️⃣ It’s called ‘Peterhouse’, not ‘Peterhouse College’. Peterhouse was actually known as St Peter’s College until late in the 19th century, after which (nobody seems sure why), it began to be known as Peterhouse, which had perhaps previously been a pet name 🏛️

3️⃣ Today, the College has a diverse student body with about 80 students in each undergraduate year and about 475 students in total 👩🏽‍🎓

'Singing from the Towers' at Trinity today. Trinity College choir made its traditional May Week appearance atop the towers of Trinity College’s Great Court. Steven Grahl conducted members of the choir who were on both the Clock Tower and the Great Gate Tower. The Cambridge University Brass Ensemble played from the top of Queen's Tower to complete the surround-sound experience for the audience below.

Cambridge cows 🐮

Have you seen the cows on Laundress Green recently? Here are three facts for you to digest 🐄

1️⃣ Cows have been grazing on green spaces across Cambridge for hundreds of years.

2️⃣ Across the Green and behind the cows stands The Old Granary, a Grade II listed building at Darwin College Cambridge.

3️⃣ Laundress Green's name originates from its use by University washerwomen centuries ago, who would spread out their washing to dry on the grass.

Do you know these three wonderful facts about The Great Gate of St John's College?🚪

1️⃣ The Great Gate, completed in 1516, bears a carving of Lady Margaret Beaufort’s coat of arms. Lady Margaret Beaufort was the Founder of the College, and one of the most powerful women of her age.

2️⃣ The curious animals on either side of the coat of arms are ‘yales’ – mythical beasts with elephants’ tails, antelopes’ bodies, goats’ heads and horns that swivel.

3️⃣ The statue of St John the Evangelist stands above the carving and at his feet is an eagle, the traditional symbol of the saint.

The night climbers of Cambridge?

In the long vacation term of 1957 James Anderson (Law 1955) and his friend Neville Gunther (Medicine 1956) scaled the most prominent feature of Gonville & Caius College’s Waterhouse Building under cover of darkness.

There are many other examples of Cambridge night climbing antics, none of which are encouraged due to genuine safety concerns, but this escapade is perhaps less well known.

James, a retired Vicar now in his late eighties, recalled the night in question, and his own part in completing the planned deed, to adorn the spire above the Great Gate with an old umbrella.
