We’ve had a few queries on how to walk the public footpath that leads from Highlight Lane to Dyffryn so here’s how you get there... 🚶🏻🚶🏻♀️
Starting at the footpath at the bottom of Highlight Lane, follow the small rubble public footpath through the woods in the middle of the golf course until you reach the bottom. This route will ensure you don’t trespass onto the golf course now that play has resumed. From here climb over the concrete bridge and continue through the fields until you come across the next stile. Continue to walk through this field until you reach the next stile on the right hand stile (this one is slightly hidden as it’s a little overgrown). Carry straight on and you’ll see another stile leading to a sheep field, climb this and cross the field to the next stile. This then leads you into a cow field (tip* keep to the edges of the field not to disrupt the livestock). From here you’ll need to walk to the metal gate and hop over if the gate is locked (tip* always mount gates on the ends not the middle. It’s more robust to take weight and will ensure the farmers gate doesn’t get damaged) and follow the path to the left of the farm yard. Here, mount the next stile and pass through the farmers yard, again keeping to the side to respect the farmer. Follow the road around on the left until you see a short brick wall in front of the house with a gap and a metal bar across. Hop this and continue down the green until you find the next stile and wooden bridge (this bridge is really derelict and has a large whole in the middle so please be careful). After crossing you’ll enter a field with a lake, follow the path straight which leads you around the lake (landowners have had issues with people stopping for picnics etc so please don’t do this as it’s not public property, so pay respect to the landowners). The next stile is hidden behind a tree on the left hand side (our best tip is to keep an eye out as you begin to turn the corner as it’s easily missed), climb this and you’ll enter a paddock. Keep to the right and continue straight crossing another two fields with sheep and llamas climbing the stiles. There’s then a gate on the right hand side that takes you into a walkway in front of a crop field. Follow this around and you’ll then end up on St Lythans Road. Turn left to walk back on yourself and follow St Lythans Road until you walk up a steep hill to a cross road. Turn left and follow the road down the hill until you come to the horse paddock at the bottom. Climb the stile (this one is the most difficult stile to climb so take care) and pass through the horse fields until you reach the next stile on the left hand side (you are now back on the route you’ve just walked). Continue to the next stile and climb that. Continue on following the lane and climb both metal bars on the concrete bridge. Meander left towards the shaded woodland area to follow the public footpath (don’t walk straight up the golf course as that’s not the public footpath) continue up the narrow rubble path which will lead you to the next stile at Highlight and viola!
It’s not the easiest of routes and the terrain is very uneven but it’s a lovely countryside footpath with some amazing views. Most of the walk is a public footpath on private land so please show respect to all of our neighbouring landowners and their livestock 💚🌿
