Driving tests in Wales
FACE COVERINGS
We continue to expect pupils to wear a face covering when you come for driving tests, unless you have a good reason not to, such as:

having a physical or mental illness or impairment, or a disability that means you cannot put on, wear or remove a face covering
putting on, wearing or removing a face covering would cause you severe distress
You must tell us if they have a good reason not to wear a face covering when they book their test – if you have made the booking on behalf of your pupil you will need to do this if required.

Your test will not take place without a face covering if they do not tell us ahead of their test.

Dangerous/serious fault on test
If you make a serious or dangerous fault, which means you’ve failed the test, the driving examiner will still direct you back to the driving test centre, where the test will end. This is to minimise the amount of time they need to spend in the vehicle.

We will keep this measure under review.

The top 10 reasons people fail the driving test
The DVSA published the top 10 reasons for failing the driving test to help learners understand the common faults and knowledge and skills they need to work on to pass first time.

This includes tips for learners to improve their driving to avoid these mistakes.

The DVSA are also encouraging learners to practise driving on a variety of roads and in different conditions, so they are better prepared for their test.

Extending theory test centre opening hours
From Monday 10 May to Wednesday 30 June, we’ll extend the opening hours at most theory test centres in England and Wales, where conditions allow.

Typically, centres will be open earlier and close later in the evenings. For example, some centres will be open from 8am to 8pm, and some might be open on Saturdays and Sundays where they were previously closed.

This will create 300,000 extra theory test appointments.

Update on private practice in Wales

From tomorrow (27 March) the stay local journey guidance is changing in Wales. This means that learner drivers in Wales can take private practice on any journey within Wales.

The private practice must still be with someone from their own household or support bubble.

We are emailing all theory test and practical test candidates with a test booking to let them know that from today they can practice driving with someone from their household or support bubble on more than local journeys.

DVSA research with learners found those who practice with friends and family are 1.4 times more likely to pass their test compared to those that didn’t have private practice.

Restarting driving lessons and tests in Wales

Following the Welsh First Minister’s review on 12 March, we have worked with the Welsh Government and stakeholders to agree restart dates of all our driver and rider services in Wales.

The dates are the same as the indicative restart dates for England and will go ahead if the public health position remains favourable in Wales.

We wanted to provide you with these dates as quickly as we possible to help you plan for reopening your businesses and to start teaching again in Wales.

Restarting driving lessons and tests
If the public health position remains favourable the proposed date for you to restart driving lessons and training is Monday 12 April 2021.

We know many of you want the opportunity to carry out lessons and training before we restart driving tests, and we agree with this.

Therefore, tests are due to restart 10 days later, on Thursday 22 April.

In the meantime, your pupils can continue to practise driving with an accompanying driver from within their household on local journeys.
