Whilst the weather is pants, why not sit down with a cuppa and enjoy this 10 min video showing part 1 of our recent expedition to Tanzania.

Mount Meru is the 5th tallest mountain in Africa and it stands at 4,566m. We used it as a means of acclimatisation and variety to our Kilimanjaro expedition, and it came out as one of the main highlights of the entire trip for so many people.

Our summit day was sensational, producing a sunrise that none of us will ever forget.

Enjoy!

Kilimanjaro - 5895m

The tallest mountain in North Africa & the tallest free standing mountain in the world!

What a cool trip this was. After dropping down from Mlunt Meru, which served as a brilliant place to acclimatise, we could then climb Kilimanjaro via the Machame route over just 5.5 days.

The route started in the rainforest and soon moved to moorland. After day 2 you're then into what's known as 'Arctic Desert'. The pace is slow and steady, and the food is superb, given where you are.

The team did super well and continued to bite chunks out of this massive dormant volcano, and before we knew it we'd made it to Barafu Camp at 4,800m ready to launch our summit push. Midnight soon came and we left the tents, following a trail of lights up the hill, with more joining us behind. The summit slopes to Stella Point went on and on, and mental resolve was being tested as much as the physical fitness of those trying to reach the top. Just before sunrise we reached Stella Point, which then left just 45 minutes of easier walking to get to the highest point on the Crater rim, also known as Uhuru Peak.

The challenge had been completed, and we were rewarded with excellent views. The rest of that day saw us descend down to Mweka Camp at about 3,200m, and then a final 3 hour hike on the last day completed our journey.

The Kilimanjaro expedition really is something different to say, heading to Nepal. It certainly challenges you, and with camping being the accommodation, this adds a different dimension too.

Our next Kilimanjaro & Mt Meru expedition is in Jan 2026. Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you'd like to take one of our last remaining places.

They've done it!

Exped 2 reached the summit of Kilimanjaro this morning under blue skies and sunshine. Summit day on Kili is a bit of a slog, but it's so worth it when you finally reach this iconic summit board.

Huge congratulations everyone!

Exped 2 have made it to Base Camp! (Barafu Camp)

They've worked hard to get here, and now have the chance to replenish energy and rest before a delightful 11pm wake up. At midnight, they'll start their ascent for the summit of Kilimanjaro.

After an initial steep section there is about 30 minutes of relent in the gradient. After this things go uphill for hours...and hours. The local teams do their best to motivate, and the sound of singing echo through the dark skies. 'Kili...kilimanjaro....Hakuna....Matata'

Stella Point is reached about sunrise, and this then leaves a 45 minute, easier walk, across the Crater rim to the true summit.

Best of luck all, you've got this - dig deep!

Have you been inspired by our recent expeditions? Are you ready to have your own adventure?

In 4 weeks we depart for Morocco for our 2025 Winter Toubkal expedition, and we still have spaces available for you to join us. On this trip we will aim to ascend North Africa's tallest peak, as well as at least one other! Furthermore, you'll get the chance to learn winter skills, and test yourself against a short, multi-day expedition at altitude.

Your expedition will be led by LMG T&E Company Director, Matt Le Voi, a qualified Winter Mountain Leader, 8000m peak Summiteer and experienced overseas expedition leader.

Let LMG Treks & Expeditions be the host of your international adventure! Get in touch for more info.

Exped 2 are now at Baranco Camp (3900m). Their day today aided their acclimatisation by climbing from Shira Camp at the same altitude, up to the Lava Tower at 4600m. After some lunch there, they descended about 3km of trails back to 3900m to Camp.

All are well and loving it. Just more more full day before hiding for the summit on Tuesday morning.

I've not been back from Kilimanjaro long, and I had the opportunity to meet up with some of our Winter Toubkal '24 team.

I love the friendships that are often forged on our expeditions, and getting together almost one year on brought back some fab memories from the trip - not forgetting the refuge door incident 😅 (you had to be there).

I'm stoked that some of these guys are now preparing to come to Mera Peak with us in the Autumn of 2026!

Exped 2 have made it to Shira Cave Camp which sits at approximately 3800m on Kilimanjaro. Great work all!

It's been a busy day in Tanzania! 🇹🇿

Expedition 1 has just finished their trek of Kilimanjaro. A one hour bus ride separates them from showers and cold beers! A big well done everyone. Big thanks to everyone in our trekking team that helped to make this happen.

Meanwhile, over on Mount Meru, expedition 2, led by Fliss, has reached the 4566m summit. Cracking work all!

Kilimanjaro summit success!

Not quite a full house on the summit, but there were certainly superb efforts all round. Kilimanjaro certainly isn't a 'cake walk', with the summit push demanding both physical and mental strength.

The Kilimanjaro team have made it to Baranco Camp and with that the end of day 3 of 6.

Everyone is doing really well, and our time on Mount Meru has certainly helped our performance. Tomorrow we have a big day, starting with the steep and imposing Baranco Wall. Tomorrow night we will leave from Barafu Camp (4600m) for the summit.

Mount Meru

Mount Meru is the 4th tallest mountain in Africa, standing at 4566m tall. Thanks to the landscape, it really is just Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro that stand proud of the surrounding flatlands, therefore making both mountains very striking.

Climbing Mount Meru offers an opportunity to not only climb a different style mountain to Kili, but to also aid acclimatisation and get some amazing views.

Over three days, the team ascended to the summit and returned back to the National Park gate. The final day was massive and required physical and mental strength. After just a few hours of rest, the group left Saddle Camp shortly after midnight. Climbing through the night up steep, and at times, very rocky slopes.

The sunrise was to die for, with Kilimanjaro being the perfect skyline feature for us all to snap. Meru seemingly just kept on giving. The rugged terrain made it slow going, and so the final 200m ascent was hard won. Eventually, after 7 hours, we happily reached the top.

The day was far from over, as we now had to descend back to the gate at 1500m, from 4566m. A long, warm day followed with everyone clearly feeling a bit beat by the end. Dinner was demolished, showers were had, and the sleep was hopefully restorative.

Today, we load the bus up and head for Kilimanjaro. Over the next 5 days, we will ascend to the summit of Africa via the Machame route, and then return on the 6th.

Wish us luck!
