After a wild weekend it's pretty spectacular at my favourite spot on the west side.

"What's that? Michael is back doing his walks this year so just give him a shout and he will see what he can do"

Aye, I'm back doing my walks so if anyone is looking for a walking tour of Castlebay just send me a message and we can try and arrange a mutually convenient time.

Walks last approximately 90 mins. £15 for adults - children go free but must be accompanied by an adult.

ITS UNBEARABLE AT TIMES - VATERSAY GATE SPEAKS OUT

No trip to Vatersay is complete without getting a picture of the famous gate leading down to the beach but does such fame at a cost? In an exclusive interview NTG spoke to Murdina the Gate.

Interviewer: Is it a hard job being a gate on such a busy throughfare?

Murdina: The actual job is not that hard, I mean, yeah, I’m getting open and closed dozens of times a day but that’s easy enough, it is all the pressures that come with the role that I struggle with. I don’t want to sound like John Lennon when he said the Beatles were bigger than Jesus – but I know where he was coming from, and I can quite definitely say I am bigger than the Vatersay boys now.

Interviewer: What pressures do you mean?

Murdina: People are constantly taking picture of me and posting them on social media. And they never ask my permission. Recently folk have even started painting pictures of me. Whilst I find it all very flattering, it also comes a cost. I must constantly look at my best as I never know when someone will snap a selfie with me in the background. It is a lot to take.

Interviewer: How have the other gates on the island taken to your recent fame?

Murdina: Some of them say that I have changed but I really haven’t. They say I have airs and graces. It is not my fault that I attracted a WD40 sponsorship deal so I am always in tip top condition, I have a reputation to uphold, they do not seem to realize that. They think I'm a snob and I am not. I cannot help being so photogenic.

Interviewer: Is there any support available to help you?

Murdina: Yes, luckily there is a support group here which I have joined. It is me, the Catalina, the Castle and the house at the Crannag that attend most often and it seems we all face the very same pressures. I also speak to my cousin Gareth Gates now and again but to be honest, I feel I have surpassed him in fame, I mean at least people under 20 know who I am.

Interviewer: Is there anything you would like your adoring public to know Murdina?

Murdina: Just that I love that they love me but please remember I have feelings to, I can’t have a smile painted on at all times (“Unless it’s with Hammerite – It gets the job done”) Sorry I have to say that, another sponsorship deal. The only other thing I would like to say this summer is if you walk through any gate, not just me, always shut it behind you. And maybe try and take a picture of some other gates for your social media posts.

Murdina the Gate can be seen at …..why are we telling you this – you know, it will appear on Facebook 746 times this summer.
