Just published, this summer's Guest Blog https://www.geographysouthwest.co.uk/home/adventure-trips-focused-on-un-sustainable-development-goals/ features Matt Rappel (Red Kite Adventures) who considers the importance of school trips that focus on sustainability and community service. Read Matt's thought-provoking account featuring adventures across the world.

The Red Kite Adventure to Romania provides the opportunity to discover the incredible work of the Foundation Conservation Carpathia. Their mission is to fully restore the Carpathian ecosystem through creating a wilderness reserve in the Southern Carpathian Mountains of Romania. They are creating a new, non-destructive economy around the Făgăraș Mountains, for the benefit of biodiversity and local communities.

There are four key aspects to the Carpathia projects.

Conservation – creating Europe’s largest forested National Park. Helping Romania become a global leader in biodiversity conservation and a top destination for ecotourism.

Restoration – bringing forests and pastures degraded by unsustainable logging and exploitation practices back to their full capacity

Wildlife Conservation – Protecting the existing wildlife and bringing back what has been lost. Bisen and beavers have both been successfully reintroduced.

Community Outreach – Working with the local community to ensure the success of the National Park takes all stakeholders' needs into account.

Red Kite Adventures is fortunate to be able to work with the Foundation to enable students to experience first-hand the work taking place.

Participants will work on projects restoring biodiversity hotspots, saving endangered wildlife and working with local communities. They will also be able to stay at the purpose-built eco-education centre and wildness camp.

If you would like to know more about their work, please check out their website here: https://www.carpathia.org/

What was your greatest adventure?
Mine was canoeing the Lower Zambezi in 2002 as part of my four-month honeymoon travelling across Africa with my wonderful wife, Suzi.

We spent our days canoeing down the vast Zambezi River, watching in wonder the majestic elephants, buffalo, zebra and other wildlife graze at the water's edge. After a long day's paddle, we would pitch our see-through tents on sand islands in the middle of the river and fall asleep under the night stars.

Waking up to the sight of an elephant walking within two feet of my head one night and to the sound of a lion on the other side of the bank another night, certainly got the adrenaline going. That was only surpassed by the constant mock charges we faced from angry hippos in the spectacular Mana Pools National Park. This is not an adventure that would pass the strict safety controls for Red Kite's student adventures sorry!

We would love to hear what your greatest adventure has been so far, with a favourite photo if you have one. (Sorry about the quality of these pictures btw, it was pre smart phone days!)

Discover more about the wonderful work of the Masarang Foundation and the Tasikoki Wildlife Rescue Centre in Sulawesi, Indonesia. Led by its inspirational founder, Dr Willie Smits, their projects work with local communities to protect animal life and restore the rainforests of Indonesia.

There are four key aspects to the North Sulawesi projects.

Tasikoki Wildlife Rescue Centre - aims to combat the trade in wild animals, confiscate illegally traded animals, provide care and release them into the wild when possible.

Rainforest Restoration – creates new forests that also look after the needs of the local population.

Sugar Palm – develops this sustainable resource as an alternative to the devastating palm oil.

Temboan Beach – establishes a permanent conservation zone that brings back the rainforest.

Red Kite Adventures are fortunate to be able to work with the Foundation to enable students to experience first hand the work taking place. Students are able to stay at Tasikoki Wildlife Rescue Centre in its spectacular setting overlooking the Lembeh Strait in the Biodiversity hotspot of North Sulawesi. There they can carry out service work at the centre as well as learn from each of the projects in the region.

Since covid the number of groups visiting Tasikoki has significantly reduced. This is a vital source of funding for the Foundation and we are hoping to re-build this wonderful opportunity for students and indeed any interested groups.

Sweden has a reputation for world-leading sustainable development. This trip helps students study first-hand why they are so high on the global lists for Human Development, Happiness, Innovation and Environmental Performance.

This adventure would be great for any students (and teachers) with an interest in sustainable development, especially the economists out there.
