My friend and weaver Emma Finch https://www.facebook.com/emma.finch.9461?locale=en_GB and I spent 2 lovely days repairing Spirit Horse. Soaked the willow for 8 days first, and then did a good rebuild. She is looking fabulous now.

Since 1271, the Welsh Gatehouse’s time-blackened gates, have stood witness to the comings and goings of borderland history. They have welcomed generals and courtiers, lords and ladies, rebels and writers, administrators and antiquarians, poets and prelates.

Built and held by Norman barons and their descendents, for over three centuries, the Gatehouse passed from family to family through the female line until it was damaged by the Great Inundation of 1606, when it was bought cheap, by Francis Godwin, Bishop of Llandaff, the presiding genius of Moynes Court. Godwin was a true renaissance man: a historian, scholar, proto-archeologist and author of the first ever science fiction book The Man in the Moone, He was also the ‘gentleman builder’ who added the building’s Jacobean gables, turning Moynes Court into a ‘gentry house’ that Nikolaus Pevsner called ‘a perfect example of its kind’.

Warring brothers in the English Civil War, an unrequited love that spanned half a century, and the profound regrets of a First World War general, fill out a story that resonates down seven hundred years of tumultuous history. This is the most glorious time of year, because there are daffodils all the way up the drive to the Gatehouse. Stunning. And a field of new born lambs and sheep to one side. Just glorious to see the little lambs leaping around. Makes me smile.
