Want to learn more about the Hamlet of Robin Hood? 🤩

Robin Hood is a small group of houses, a hamlet, in the parish of Baslow. The hamlet nestles in a small side valley, high up on the road to Chesterfield. To the east are the slopes and cliffs of Birchen Edge beyond which is the high ground known as the Eastmoors🌳

The name Robin Hood has always applied to the small group of houses around the
present inn, and was first recorded on a map dated 1812🏹

The original mediaeval route out of Baslow is still preserved, hidden in the woods to
the north of the main road and is visible in the field called Megwalls. It re-appears
above Robin Hood as a group of deeply incised holloways curving their way up the
hill before heading towards Old Brampton and Chesterfield🛣️

The pub was occupied in 1841 by a John Savage, who died in 1842. It seems that his grandson helped by his brother, took the opportunity to create an inn in the hamlet, running it from his homestead next door. 🍺

This year’s Nordic Christmas theme celebrates nature, sustainability and craft with decorative objects like this gingerbread house in the Ante-Library. It took Amy from our Christmas creative team 100 hours to design, bake, make and decorate the 70 cm salt dough structure. Not wanting to use any plastic in the design, she carefully melted and moulded 70 glacier mints to create the panes of ‘glass.’ 🍬

Fancy a walk from The Robin Hood?🚶

Why not try BIRCHEN EDGE - 1.5 MILES - EASY🌳
One short scrambly climb and a steep descent, with vertical drops along Birchen Edge. Allow 1½ hours.🌄

1. From the car park entrance, turn left and walk along the B6050 for a short distance, passing the public car park and a property on the left.

2. Immediately beyond the house, at the entrance to a driveway, follow a short path leading to a gate into Access Land.

3. Follow the obvious path beyond, along the foot of the slope.

4. Keep straight on past a hawthorn tree with a boulder beneath it and a steep path opposite(this is our return route).

5. The path gradually leaves the field edge on the left and climbs through trees towards the rocks of Birchen Edge.

6 Look out for the pillar of Nelson’s Monument on the crag above, and when you find yourself below it, pick your way up through the rocks to the right of the Monument.

7. At the top of the edge, having admired the view and examined the Monument and the adjacent Three Ships, turn right and walk along the top of the edge, with the rocky drop beneath you and to your right.

8. The rocks eventually peter out and the slope to your right becomes less severe until, by an inspection cover, the path turns sharp right.

9. Follow it steeply downhill for a short distance to re-join the path at the boulder and hawthorn tree you passed earlier.

10. Turn left and retrace your steps back to the road.

11. Turn right to return to The Robin Hood.

We've got some great walks right on our doorstep - ambling through Baslow along riverside footpaths to Chatsworth House is just one unique example!

Why not plan a walk (because we haven't had enough of those yet) and finish up with a refreshing drink and some hearty fare here at The Robin Hood? Makes a walk suddenly sound tempting, eh?
