How lovely to discover this last night! The couple staying with us last week were great walkers and gardeners. They started their trip with a visit to West Dean and as you can see from their comments, they crammed a lot into their stay - and they loved our ‘local’ The Wilkes Head. It’s the first time someone has illustrated their comments ! I might frame it ! ❤️

Tuesday Ramblings - Hiking at this time of year creates the weirdest feeling of euphoria ! It might look murky when you look out the window but blimey! - it’s wonderful when you get out ! Between us we spent much of the weekend enjoying the amazingly beautiful icy scenery of The NT’s Northwood and up to the hills above Slindon Bothy. Dave out on his new Galetti on Saturday, then the two of us hiked up yesterday - with snacks and flasks in the watery sun, winter days don’t get much better ! Perfect paths for walkers and cyclists. About 10 mins drive from The Brambles.

The Chalk Stones Trail is a trail of large chalk stone sculptures by Andy Goldsworthy dotted across the South Downs countryside.

You can pick up the trail in the village of Cocking near the South Downs Way, and follow it all the way to West Dean, close to West Dean Gardens where you can catch the bus back to your starting point.

The shortest day of the year! It’s getting dark outside but it’s very festive and cozy in The Brambles. We have repeat guests arriving tomorrow for Christmas till New Year. One of our favourite places for a winter warmer is the cafe at Weald & Downland Living Museum. Even if you're not planning to visit the museum you can come and enjoy a hot drink and delicious food while watching the ducks on the pond. Many of our repeat guests are now old friends - Philip and Eva stayed with us for the third time this week. Holidaying in the UK in December can be hit and miss with the weather but they managed to dodge blustery showers, visit some great local attractions and have a few meals out!! 20mins drive from The Brambles…Two walks with our binos in two days up at Lords Piece ( Coates Common ) Far from the madding crowd, we passed no one yesterday and only a few dog walkers today. Beautiful velvety black cattle roaming free, lots of butterflies, the tak tak of multiple Stonechats perched on gorse twigs and the call of Stock Doves … perfect weekend without spending a penny! 😉

Blue skies and Red Arrows over The Brambles garden today - our guests are at Goodwood Festival of Speed for the four days - the benefit of living so close means we get to see some of the action too☺️

We were lucky with the☀️!First visit with pals to Woolbeding Gardens. Quite possibly the loveliest gardens I’ve ever been to - next to the River Rother, it’s described as a horticultural haven. You can actually feel yourself relax as you walk the paths. With the vast ten sided kinetic greenhouse at the end of the Silk Route Garden, it’s a completely chilled experience. Park and ride are provided with the £12 admission ticket . Can’t wait to go back !

There’s nowhere we’d rather have been this morning! The tail-end of the bluebells, clear views for miles, complete peace, and cowslips …. Slindon Folly - ten mins drive from The Brambles

It’s virtually full occupancy of our nest boxes this Spring !! Resident noisy house sparrow chicks in the one attached to our gateway ☺️❤️

The Brambles

My family have lived in this house, previously an Agricultural Nursery, since 1976. Dave & I, Lotte & Will moved back here in 2005. With a garden of 3 acres, the property has retained that feeling of rural isolation but is actually within walking distance of local Shops, Pub & an Indian Restaurant. The house is perfectly divided into two. The holiday accommodation has 2 bedrooms with en suite bathrooms - one a twin bed & the master bedroom can be configured as Super King size or twin. Downstairs there is a spacious lounge with wood-burner , study & fully equipped self catering kitchen. There is also an additional wet-room. The Conservatory leads onto a private secluded garden with its own gateway entrance. The garden has a very natural feel, with an abundance of wildlife all year. We all live on site & run a Pop up Restaurant from their kitchen a few times a month. Dave & I are very happy to provide home cooked meals for guests who would prefer to relax, stay in & let someone else do the work ! [to be pre-arranged with us] We are ideally located for events at #Goodwood, #Fontwell Racecourse, #Arundel & #Chichester Festivals. RSPB Pulborough, WWT Arundel, Pagham Nature Reserve, Kingley Vale & Southdowns National Park all with a 20 minute drive. We are 45 minutes drive from Portsmouth & Brighton & 10 minutes drive from The Coast.
