πŸš‚ The Selsey Tramway πŸš‚

Discover the captivating yet ill-fated story of the Selsey Tramway! This fascinating display follows the ambitious vision to connect the village of Selsey with Chichester, and how, by August 1897, the Selsey Tramway came to life under The Hundred of Manhood and Selsey Tramway Company.

Spanning seven-and-a-half miles with 11 stops, the line linked the rural villages of the Manhood Peninsula, stopping at Chichester, Hunston, Sidlesham, Selsey, as well as private farms and Selsey Golf Club. The grand opening on August 27, 1897, drew eager crowdsβ€”but the excitement was quickly dampened when the first train arrived an hour late. Delays and breakdowns soon became the tramway’s hallmark, leading it to be remembered as perhaps the most problematic railway in the area.

After nearly four decades, the Selsey Tramway’s final journey took place on January 19, 1935. Visit our exhibition, open now, to explore this unique chapter in local history.

Entry is free, with donations welcome. Find out more: https://buff.ly/3AN33qE

Here's a ringing endorsement and a good read about our Cathedral's unique Bell Tower. πŸ˜ŠπŸ””πŸ””

πŸ”” Bellringing is an ancient tradition, with the earliest reference to bells being rung at Chichester in 1232, with our current Bell Tower built around the year 1400, with the oldest of the existing bells dating back to 1587.

Today we give thanks to our band of bellringers during a special service of Choral Mattins.

If you're interested in trying your hand at the art of bellringing, visit our website to find out more: https://loom.ly/hM-f0XA

As the nation remembers members of the armed forces lost during military service, HM Coastguard laments the tragic loss of more than 1,000 sailors on 22 September 1914.

09/11/2024

Tune in to BBC One at 9pm for the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance as we come together to honour the service of past and present military personnel, and pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

This year’s event will celebrate the remarkable men and women who fought in WW2 in 1944.

We will welcome veterans from campaigns in Normandy and Monte Cassino to Kohima and Imphal in East Asia into the Royal Albert Hall, and also hear stories from those that fought in more recent conflicts a decade since UK forces ended combat operations in Afghanistan.

Hosted by Adrian Lester, there will be inspiring displays of military music from RAF Music and the The Bands of HM Royal Marines, along with performances from Tom Jones, Jack Savoretti, Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha, Samantha Barks, Alexandra Burke and Jake Isaac .

Who will you be thinking of as you watch this evening?

Remarkable πŸ˜”

A WW1 painting of the Tower of London 🎨 Did you know that the Tower remained open to the public throughout the First World War?

One visitor at this time was Canadian soldier and artist William George Storm Jr, who had moved to London to pursue a career as an artist πŸ–ŒοΈ

After painting the Tower of London on his visits, Storm left for the Western Front and, sadly, he was later killed at the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917. His painting of the Byward Tower survives as a record of visitors seeking comfort and hope at the Tower during the war.
