Gatekeepers Lodge is blessed with public footpaths and national cycling routes, making it the perfect holiday cottage for the outdoors enthusiast!
The Cotswold and Monarchs Way are 2 stunning national hiking trials that literally run past the door. However there are lots of shorter more local routes, we have maps printed in the welcome folder and we are very happy to help our guests with planning these.

Here is a nice little route around one of the other local villages, Castle Combe.

Can’t wait to meet our new neighbours ❤️ 🦌

We're delighted to share the news of the arrival of a brand new deer herd at Dyrham Park.
We know you've missed having deer in the parkland as much as we have; thank you for your patience as we've prepared and planned for this happy moment.
The new herd will need time and space to settle in to their new home so please keep your distance. They might be shy for a while, so you may not see them on your next visit.
We'll keep sharing pictures and updates to keep you posted on how they're settling in to their new surroundings.

Sites of interest along the Cotswold Way, Bath To Wotton Under Edge section.

There are many sites of beauty and historic significance at the southern end of the Cotswold Way. It is here where the footpath passes over the Cotswolds Escarpment, just north of Bath and overlooks the Severn Vale and Welsh Mountains beyond. Today we focus on Old Sodbury. The Cotswold Way passes directly through this inconspicuous village, and visitors can easily pass, without realising it's hidden sites of importance including:

James Dyson's: Doddington Estate
900 yr old Norman Church, Saint John the Baptist,
St Adeline’s & Little Sodbury Manor (where William Tyndale born c.1490, a protestant reformer/martyr once lived, his fascinating story includes translating the Bible into English, allowing the book to be accessed by the masses for the first time)

Old Sodbury Hill-fort is one of many Bronze/ Iron age encampments locally which also include Dyrham & Horton camps. The fort is approx. 11acres in size and is made up of a double set of ditches and ramparts. Its location is a mystery due to its relative difficulty in access and lack of local fresh water supplies. Local legend claims the Romans refortified the camp after the invasion, and it was almost certainly utilised during the wars of the roses.

Visitors may like to base themselves at Gatekeepers Lodge, (A Grade II listed former Gate/Turnpike Toll house to the now National Trust Dyrham Estate), A Self-Contained/Self-Catered Cottage Gatekeepers, is the perfect place to explore Bath and the South Cotswold’s. Available for short stays, (including 1-night stays for passing walkers) guests can walk to Old Sodbury on the Cotswold Way (both locations being directly situated on the Trail) We'd recommend a stop at Old Sodbury's Dog Inn for lunch, maybe getting a Taxi back to Gatekeepers Lodge or walking if still feeling energetic. Book direct www.gatekeeperslodge.co.uk

Stay tuned for more!

A lovely narrative about the Cotswold Way, including the stretches that pass the very front door of our very own Gatekeepers Lodge.

The Cotswold way is a National Trail extending from the quintessentially English market town of Chipping Campden to the Roman city of Bath, the 102 mile (164 km) Cotswold Way has existed as a promoted long-distance walk and had its 50th anniversary in 2020.

To walk the Cotswolds way from Gatekeepers Lodge, guests simply walk out the front door. Turn left and follow the way markers south to Bath. Or Turn right to Chipping Camden. We know of no other property closer to this beautiful trail than ours. ❤️

We had almost reached the very end of our there and back walk along the Cotswold Way. There were just two days of walking left and a mere 13 miles to cover: although 26 when doubled up as we would …

Here Chipping Sodbury’s (a beautiful historic Cotswolds Town in its own right, boasting the widest market street in England) Tourist information website lists some of the South Cotswolds gems that offer the charms and beauty of the Cotswolds quintessential English country experience for the visitor who is looking for the quieter experience.
