Out of season is when we look at the detail of and find new ways to bring delicious comfort to your stay with us. It matters that you find what you’re looking for, that all of your senses are stimulated and nourished, but not over worked. Any kind of break away should feed into the parts of you that are malnourished in daily life and perhaps a slower pace is adopted. Lazy mornings or sunrise awakening, long meals by candlelight at the kitchen table or hot buttered toast by the brook. Games and wine. Walks and flasks of strong tea. You can live in a place a long time and still not have found the hidden pearl beyond price. A trip to the post office prompted a spontaneous visit to The Silk Mill on Sheep Street. I’ve been before, but not for a while and only ground floor. The gallery showcases and sells local artists’ work. It’s a veritable treasure trove. Then the real gem presented, upstairs is the silver smithing workshop. Dropped into a rabbit hole of wonderland proportions here. Dickensian almost, as the afternoon light filters through the original glazing, touching dust and tools alike and softening the edges. The guy who was working on a commission piece there took time out to give me some background to this wonderful place. It’s a step back in time, the bundles of invoices (7years worth per bundle) hang like paper sculptures from the ceiling, dating back to the 1940s when the studio was opened. Go and visit. We’ve welcomed and hosted so many lovely people from all over the globe this season. Our last guests departed this morning and left us a gift. An embroidered cloth showing by a red star exactly where they live in the state of Minnesota. Never ceases to amaze me how gracious our visitors are and the wealth they bring to our lives. Kind. Appreciated. Makes it all worthwhile. Skilful hands have stitched this in a place miles away from here. Connected.❤️

Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent, also the start of my big Lent walk for Cafod. Used Strava to record my walk - managed to get lost - but definitely got my 5k in for today. There were things along the way that drew me into the path of Jesus. The treachery of mud, slipping and sliding up hill and down dale - His own life journey encountered the same, the barbs of thorny hedgerows and the crown of thorns, the fields laid waste and his time in the desert, the many gates I had to pass through along the way and getting lost despite having a navigation system, the red heart shaped leaf brings to mind the Sacred Heart.
