Tom and Andy B are having a great time in the resort of St. Anton am Alberg, Austria. Only a few days left now until the journey home!

A big thank you to our Austrian colleagues at Taxi Kogoj Ges.m.b.H. for their assistance with washing the coach, and toilet drop facilities.

GR74 DLE is now sparkling, and the toilet serviceable for the long homeward journey on Thursday evening!

Thursday again saw some of our drivers complete some more training. This time, Emergency Vehicle Evacuation.

This course aimed at providing drivers with the skills necessary to deal with a dangerous and potentially life threatening situations.

Some of the objectives included:

🔥 Know how to reduce the risk of vehicle fires
🔥 Know when and how to use a fire extinguisher
🔥 Know how to safely evacuate a vehicle

There was a practical session, involving a Smoke Generator to replicate some of the conditions of an emergency, such as a vehicle fire. Drivers were then given different scenarios to deal with.

A great day overall!

Again, joined by our colleagues from James Bevan Coaches

As it’s Half Term in the Forest of Dean, yesterday some of our staff completed the training course: PSVAR - Wheelchair Safety and Disability Awareness.

The course covered various topics, including:

✅ The meaning of the term disability
✅ The law and requirements around disability
✅ Different types of disability
✅ Loading and securing passengers and wheelchairs
✅ Best practice when interacting with a disabled passenger
✅ Regulations about Assistance Dogs

This is all part of our continued investment in CPD as a company to ensure that our staff are equipped with the correct knowledge and skills to best look after our passengers.

We were also joined by our friends from James Bevan Coaches in Lydney.

Tomorrow we will be learning about Passenger Emergency and Evacuations 😀

Sunday: Following a morning departure we travel toward the east of the country making the usual refreshment stops. We arrive in Ipswich during the afternoon. Here we spend four nights at the Salthouse Harbour Hotel. A boutique style hotel, it is situated overlooking Ipswich Marina and is a former warehouse with a modern extension.

Monday: This morning we travel to Bury St Edmunds, one of Suffolks most appealing towns. The town can trace its origins from a Benedictine Monastery founded to accommodate the remains of Edmund the last Saxon King of East Anglia. Today Bury is better known for its graceful Georgian streets and buildings, the most distinguished being the ivy covered Angel Hotel which features in Dickens The Pickwick Papers. Later we travel to Lavenham once the centre of the regions wool trade and is now one of the most visited villages in Suffolk, thanks to its perfectly preserved half timbered houses. Little has changed since the demise of the wool industry and the village has carefully maintained its antique appearance.

Tuesday: This morning we travel to the outskirts of Woodbridge to Sutton Hoo It was here in 1939 a local farmer / archaeologist investigated one of a group of burial mounds on a sandy ridge on a remote part of the Suffolk coast. He unearthed the forty oar burial ship of an Anglo Saxon warrior king packed with his most valuable possessions. Much of the Sutton Hoo treasure is now in London’s British Museum and some of the artifacts can be seen in the Sutton Hoo Exhibition Hall. Whilst we are here, we have a guided tour of the burial site with an experienced guide. Later we travel to the popular coastal resort of Aldeburgh.

Wednesday: Today we travel to the outskirts of Colchester to visit the gardens of the award winning gardener, author and lecturer Beth Chatto OBE. Worked on the gardens began in 1960 when it was an overgrown wasteland of brambles, parched gravel and boggy ditches and was transformed into an inspirational, informal garden we see today. Later we travel back towards Ipswich and onto Waldringfield, where we board our boat for a two hour cruise of the River Deben. A jam scone can be enjoyed whilst onboard. After we will return to our hotel.

Thursday: This morning we leave Ipswich and commence the homeward journey, making the usual refreshment stops, arriving back during the afternoon.

Our History

Coaching is an industry that has been associated with the Grindle family for many many years, over 90 in fact.

It all dates back to the mid 1920’s when Roy Grindle first introduced charabancs, although at least two generations of family had been involved in making deliveries by pony and trap before this time. Roy and Brother Percy set up separate businesses on either side of Woodside Street, Cinderford. There was some rivalry but it was all friendly! Percy owned three coaches as well as some removal vans whereas Roy focused on just the coaches.

Roy was to buy his first coach in 1936. He contributed to the war effort by taking workers to the nearby Hurricane factory in Brockworth, Gloucester. Due to this he was allocated 6 Bedford utility vehicles to support and expand the fleet to 15 vehicles.

In 1949 Roy’s son, Harry Grindle, passed his test and joined the company. By this time Roy Grindle and Sons had started operating their own tour programme; the first tour being an 8 day trip to Scotland. The first continental trip was a private to Spain in 1953 and by 1956 they took bookings and successfully ran a tour to Switzerland. Harry eventually took over the family business in 1962 when Roy, his father, died. By 1963-64 the business really started to take off and by the late 1960’s was going flat out, buying a new coach every year.
