The Platform Gallery provides a unique market place for handmade crafts from across the UK.

Artist in Focus! – Lesley Walker

We love to champion Ribble Valley Craft Talent here at the Gallery so its great to have the opportunity to share the work of Ribble valley Artist Lesley walker.
Lesley walker moved to up to the Ribble Valley to concentrate on my own artwork once and found inspiration by the surrounding landscape and the history of the textile industry.

She collects and re-uses interesting scraps of old lace, vintage wooden bobbins, discoloured linen threads, mother of pearl buttons and lengths of corroded wire and her ceramic flower bobbins evoke memories of childhood – identifying and picking posies of wild flowers on walks, to be taken home and arranged in jam jars of water on the kitchen table. Lesley describes herself as a gatherer of words and poetry, which she includes in her ceramic pieces – noisily tapping each letter singly with one finger on an ancient typewriter.

Work on display starts at £34 and her vintage bobbins are the perfect gift for lovers of vintage and literature alike.

Artist in Focus! – Ali Haley

We love finding new craftspeople to take part in our annual Northern Star and this year we have loved displaying Ali’s work.

Every piece that Ali produces is crafted from recycled silver, ethically sourced. All her designs are unique. From forging the metal to the final, loving polish, Ali creates each piece from raw materials to the completed item.

Ali finds inspiration for her designs in the landscape around her home. The natural world holds treasures, from the magnificence of the skies during a storm to the minuscule, detailed mathematical patterns in the mosses and lichens.
Work on display starts at £35 and her crisp bold angular designs are a great gift choice for that person in your life that covets ethically sourced British Craft.

Artist in Focus! – Stephanie Mann

The very talented Manchester based Jeweller Stephanie Mann has returned to the gallery as a part of our current Northern Star exhibition after a few years break from displaying with us and its fantastic to have her back.

Her work is heavily influenced by patterns and texture within her surroundings; both natural and man-made. She is driven by a desire to combine these elements with strong geometric shapes and a sense of movement.

Work on display with us starts at £40 and would make a wonderful gift for jewellery lovers in your life that have a love of pattern and handmade British Craft.

Dermod Ruddock will be joining us for a weekend long pop up exhibition titled Broad Horizons on 6th December through to Sunday 8th December. There will be a a selection of pieces on display and Dermod will also be demonstrating his painting technique for visitors too.

This temporary exhibition compliments our Northern star exhibition in the main gallery space perfectly , so there is no better time to start sourcing beautiful handmade gifts for your loved ones, or yourself!
Gallery is open Monday to Friday 10-4.30, Saturdays 10-4 and Sunday 11-4 ( December only).

Broad Horizons Pop-up is on display until 15.45 on Sunday 8th December.

Artist in Focus! – Lucy Wray of Thrift Design

Lancashire based artist Lucy has exhibited her work at the Platform many times and we are so pleased to have her joyous collages back on display with us as a part of our Northern star exhibition. The work on display starts at £39 and is the ideal gift for that Craft lover in your life that is sustainability focused, below is an excerpt from Lucy's Artists statement.

“All my art pieces are made from ‘rubbish’ or as I prefer to call them ‘salvaged materials’. I relish the challenge of using discarded materials to represent animals and birds and I try to capture their personality and movement. Sadly, most of the creatures I create are endangered or at risk often due to the miss-use and disposal of the materials I use to create them.”

Elfin Alchemy will be joining us from 1pm tomorrow for a week long pop up exhibition titled Enchanting ,in our Mix space. Artist Rowena Sam Taylor will be displaying a selection of handmade sculptural wire work earrings, necklaces, pendants brooches and fused glass pieces.
