Happy birthday to this crazy alien species aka Myrddin our ‘baby’ llama, who is seven today. Still existing in his own little world…no one knows what he thinks……or if he even thinks... All we know is that he is the calmest, most gentle soul, with an amazing smooth silky coat!

Many thanks to Lauren from Dyfed Farm Vets for visiting the llamas this week and giving everyone their annual vaccinations. Animal welfare is always top of everything we do here and we really appreciated Lauren’s calm and confident presence around the llamas and making sure they were safe for another year.

Happy birthday to our kind senior llama Ieuan, who turned 11 today. Always the perfect gentlemen, who is not too keen in the limelight but always happy to help out. Time flies when you’re llama trekking! 🦙🦙🦙

Here’s a few of the cheeky young llamas that we have rehomed in the past year. From left: greedy Gordon Brown (probably part guanaco, and we suspect a bit in-bred!), centre is Ethelred - a very sweet patient boy, and right: Bojack, a beautiful young man who loves to kick over his food buckets!

Lurking in the background is Albie (L), one of our trustee’s llamas, and Jojo Llama (R), another llama we rehomed last year. He was likely under 1 year old when he arrived guessing by his size. Like all our rehomed llamas, his exact age is unknown.

We’ve been busy fattening all these skinny young boys up over the winter, and they are currently loving the fresh spring grass!

Happy llamaversary everyone! 🥳🦙

13th May marks the date that llamas first descended upon Glanrhydwilym, and they continue to amaze us just as much now as they did all those years ago. There’s nothing better than hanging out with these curious souls in the fields and listening to what they have to say 🤗🦙🦙🦙

This is Jeremy, a llama that we rehomed last year. Next to him are Elvis (L) and Sir Patrick Moore (R), our Customer Liason Turkeys. This photo actually won an award run by the British Llama Society, under the theme ‘best friends’. The turkeys often try to come with us on llama treks; indeed we have often wondered whether we should branch out into turkey trekking, such is their enthusiasm for following us everywhere. They’re a massive hit with our visitors too - we have a saying here: people come for the llamas but leave with the turkeys - such is their popularity and frequent mentions in the guest book and in reviews. Guests are routinely heard to utter the phrase ‘I’ve never seen a live turkey before in person’. Everyone goes home a turkey convert.

No need to convert anyone to llamas of course. Jeremy here came from a large herd of over 100 llamas that we coordinated the rehoming of last year on a really tight time span. Jeremy and a few of his friends ended up staying with us long term, and waking up to see his sweet little face every morning reminds us of how privileged we are to do what we do and gives us the strength to continue doing it. Lots of exciting plans and discussions taking place currently for the next phase of Project Llama. As soon as everything is in place and we’re ready to go you’ll be first to hear about it here! Thanks as always for your support and to everyone who has supported us through this wet wet wet muddy winter.

A few weeks back we finally finished this year’s shearing. Very late this year due to all the wet weather. We shear purely for health reasons - to keep the llamas cool in summer. The undomesticated guanaco that llamas are descended from shed their coats, but llamas - being an entirely domesticated species that have been selectively bred for their fibre for thousands of years - require regular shearing in order to stop overheating. Not every llama necessarily needs shearing every year - it depends very much on their coat type and the individual animal.

Here head llama Teilo models the 2023 look - and doesn’t he look happy about it 😊🦙
