The bright lights of the High Street! It is freezing 🥶 but the sky is clear and (amazingly) it feels like it’s getting slightly lighter in the evenings!

This main Colchester street is the same route as the main high street of Roman Colchester 2000 years ago! Which means you can walk in the footsteps of our ancestors whenever you walk down Colchester High Street! 🦶

Love this! Our friend Jon is a home brewer and he made this Baltic Porter, designing the label based on the Three Cups sign that hangs in Trinity Street! I especially love this because I pointed out this sign to him on one of my Secret Colchester tours 🤫

The Three Cups was a coaching inn and cool hang-out of Georgian Colchester, situated along the High Street. After it was demolished in 1968, the Three Cups sign was kept and placed on Trinity Street where the Cups Pub opened a few years later. Although no pub there now (a Fatface shop is in its place) I love that The Cups sign still hangs as a reminder (I have a feeling have a had a hand in helping preserve this!) ☺️

Just sharing some of my favourite Autumnal snaps of West Stockwell Street and the huge cooker tree (Google informs me this is a Horse Chestnut tree!) 🌳

The Church on this street (St Martin’s Church) is Medieval and sustained a significant amount of damage during the Siege of Colchester in 1648💥 You can spot a pretty hefty blow to its tower from this time as it looks quite wonky!

Some of the building material used to create the church is recycled Roman brick ♻️ If you walk through the little next-door passage, Quakers Alley, see if you can spot some of the ammonite fossils in the brickwork 😯

Oh and Quakers Alley delivers on beauitful views of the Town Hall on a sunny day 😎

It’s #BlueMonday so I think we all need something funny to lighten the most depressing day of the year!! I stumbled upon these Daleks doing their shopping early on Invasion Day last year. I was really chuffed because I’d only popped out for travel sickness tablets! It just goes to show, you never do know what you’re going to stumble upon in Colchester! It could be a Roman gateway that’s 2000 years old or it might be Daleks from the planet Skaro 🪐 @invasion_colchester is a fantastic home-grown Colchester event which sees the entire city transformed with a friendly invasion of superheroes and characters raising money for local charities! ❤️ Last year they raised over £1500! What a fab week of special, uniquely Colchester events! Colchester is one of only 13 Gun Saluting Stations in the country as specially chosen by Queen Elizabeth II in 2008! So it’s a real treat that we can have this event for special Royal occasions (this one honours King Charles’ birthday!) Beforehand, you’ll have the added bonus of a bandstand concert from Colchester’s very own British Army Band!
