The original Colchester United FC v Ipswich Town Football Club!!

- 5 March 1777, "A Main of C**ks" was fought at The Waggon and Horses, with "the gentleman of Suffolk against the gentlemen of Essex, shewing 21 mains for five guineas a battle and ten the odd battle".

The inn was demolished in 1938.

Happy Lunar New Year! 🧧

This week I was taken by a friend to a very cool Chinese restaurant for lunch right in the middle of Colchester. It’s run by CCA (Colchester Chinese Association) and serves a mix of Chinese dishes with a regularly changing menu. I really enjoyed it and I loved how friendly and welcoming everyone was there 🙂

I feel really happy that in you have the opportunity to have a taste of someone else’s culture and this place really is a hidden gem! The CCA is a charity run largely by volunteers to serve the local Chinese community and help with integration into Colchester life. The Ultimate Sportsmen on Wheels!

The fearless charioteers, most of whom were enslaved and always male, underwent years of training to compete for glory and the chance to become the greatest racer in the Roman world. However, the stakes were high - chariot racing was a brutal and often deadly sport.

At Camulodunum (modern-day Colchester), the Roman Circus could accommodate over 8,000 spectators, all eager to witness the heart-pounding action.

Despite the chaos, charioteers had to follow strict rules:

❌ No ramming other chariots
❌ No using reins as whips
❌ Only hands could be used to control the horses 🐎

Breaking these rules could lead to disqualification or even a racing ban!
Judges, appointed by Roman officials, had the final say on who claimed victory.

The bright lights of the High Street! It is freezing 🥶 but the sky is clear and (amazingly) it feels like it’s getting slightly lighter in the evenings!

This main Colchester street is the same route as the main high street of Roman Colchester 2000 years ago! Which means you can walk in the footsteps of our ancestors whenever you walk down Colchester High Street! 🦶
