We’re looking forward to repeating these popular trips in 2025, in the meantime here are a few pics.

FRIDAYWOOD WILDLIFE DAY -
BIRDS & BUTTERFLIES SPECIAL
Thursday 4th July 2024

Our group enjoyed the day wandering around the wildlife-rich site of Fridaywood on the edge of Colchester.

With great weather throughout the day, we were treated to a wide range of birds, buterflies, flowers and other insects. The main birding highlight was a EUROPEAN HONEY BUZZARD that flew over us at a very low height but despite searching, we never saw it again! Other birds included EURASIAN BULLFINCHES, EURASIAN HOBBY, LESSER WHITETHROAT and all the common warblers.

Here are some images of the wonderful wildlife we saw....

STOUR WOOD RSPB & WRABNESS EWT RESERVE – TURTLE DOVES, FRITILLARIES AND HAIRSTREAKS
Monday 1st July 2024

Fantastic weather for our guided walk to Northeast Essex. Wrabness delivered once again with good scope views of a EUROPEAN TURTLE DOVE plus we heard two others during our walk around.

Other birding highlights included 90+ SAND MARTIN, LITTLE OWL, YELLOWHAMMER and bird of the day went to an OSPREY fishing over the estuary which we watched for around 10 minutes before it drifted off.

The warm sunshine brought out lots of insects including our first GATEKEEPERS of the year.

After lunch, we headed the short distance to the Stour Estuary reserve which was quiet for birds but the butterflies didn’t disappoint with many RINGLETS & MEADOW BROWNS and the star of the show was a rather splendid SILVER-WASHED FRITILLARY!

SUMMER SEABIRDS OF PEMBROKESHIRE & SKOMER ISLAND
Monday 3rd – Thursday 6th June 2024

It was so good to be back in South Wales after a 5 year absence and we kicked off our tour with a visit to the fantastic Newport Wetlands RSPB reserve where we had great views of several EURASIAN BITTERN, hunting EURASIAN HOBBY and orchids including BEE, COMMON SPOTTED & SOUTHERN MARSH.

We spent the following day on Skomer Island, home to hundreds of thousands of seabirds and we weren’t disappointed! The close-up views of ATLANTIC PUFFINS, NORTHERN FULMAR, COMMON GUILLEMOTS & RAZORBILLS were second to none plus the supporting cast of RED-BILLED CHOUGHS, PEREGRINE FALCON, several SHORT-EARED OWLS, NORTHERN WHEATEARS and lots more that the time just flew by.

Our third day saw a change of scenery when we birded some lovely valleys and forests not far from our base. Highlights here included WILLOW TIT, RED CROSSBILL, SPOTTED FLYCATCHER, GREY WAGTAIL, WHITE-THROATED DIPPER, COMMON KINGFISHER, WILLOW WARBLER, RED KITE, TREE PIPIT, NORTHERN RAVEN, EURASIAN NUTHATCH and MARSH TIT.

Our evening was spent out on the sea around Skomer Island where seabirds were again very much in evidence and we had fantastic sightings of MANX SHEARWATERS as they gathered offshore before returning to the island as it got dark to avoid predators such as GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL.

After leaving Wales we broke our journey east with a visit to the Forest of Dean and enjoyed good sightings of EUROPEAN PIED FLYCATCHERS, COMMON REDSTARTS, EURASIAN TREECREEPER and much more which rounded off the tour very nicely indeed!

ISLE OF WIGHT & DORSET SPRING WILDLIFE BREAK
Thursday 23rd – Monday 27th May 2024

It was so good to return to the Southwest for a five-day tour looking at the best wildlife this region has to offer.

We kicked off with two days on the Isle of Wight where we connected with all our target species including the gorgeous GLANVILLE FRITILLARY which offered us great views on the wildflower strewn coastal paths. Other butterflies included DINGY SKIPPER, SMALL BLUE and COMMON BLUE. Whilst on the island we saw RED SQUIRREL, some lovely WALL LIZARDS basking in the morning sunshine and two mighty WHITE-TAILED EAGLES from the recent reintroduction programme.

Moving onto the New Forest, the wonderful weather gave us the opportunity to see some raptors including up to three NORTHERN GOSHAWKS and EURASIAN HOBBY. WOODLARK, COMMON REDSTART, COMMON FIRECREST were found in the woods and scrub. We rounded off the day watching PEARL-BORDERED FRITILLARIES in a sunny forest ride as they nectared on the wildflowers.

The following day was spent around the Isle of Portland and Weymouth where seawatching produced MANX SHEARWATERS, NORTHERN GANNETS, RAZORBILLS, COMMON GUILLEMOTS, COMMON SCOTER, BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES and NORTHERN FULMARS. After a walk around the headland, we had a lovely lunch, and the Portland Crab sandwiches were very popular!

The afternoon was spent searching for butterflies and we found lots of COMMON BLUES and a few WALL BROWNS. We rounded off the day with visits to Ferrybridge and Lodmoor RSPB reserve where arctic-bound waders were seen including SANDERLING, DUNLIN, BAR-TAILED GODWIT, RED KNOT, COMMON RINGED PLOVERS and GREY PLOVER. Other species of note included WESTERN MARSH HARRIER, COMMON SWIFTS and good numbers of LITTLE & COMMON TERNS.

Our final morning was spent at Martin Down NNR where we saw GREY PARTRIDGE, YELLOWHAMMER, CORN BUNTING, RED KITE, EURASIAN SKYLARK and COMMON CUCKOO.

Butterflies were on the wing and new species for the tour included GRIZZLED SKIPPER, GREEN HAIRSTREAK, ADONIS BLUE & MARSH FRITILLARY plus there were some beautiful orchids including BURNT-TIP, CHALK FRAGRANT & COMMON SPOTTED ORCHIDS.

As we finished lunch, the heavens opened, and we headed back to Essex after a fantastic tour with so many wildlife highlights, amazing weather (how lucky were we!) all spent with a lovely group of customers.
