🧐 Fascinating River Facts

🌎 The tide rise at Chepstow is the fastest on Earth. The tide can rise 13 metres (43 ft) in 4 hours!

🌗 Astronomical tides (moon-sun induced) at Chepstow and the Severn Estuary are the second highest ‘average’ tides on Earth!

🌊 99% of all rivers flow in only one direction, whereas the River Wye flows in two directions - South to the sea and North to Tintern. It changes its flow four times in every 24-hours!

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Dydd Gwyl Dewi Hapus! Happy St David’s Day. Although both our cottages are in England we are so very close to the Welsh border. The mix of Welsh and English cultures makes this a very interesting place to visit, not only beautiful but packed full of history 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Amazing photograph of Bigsweir Bridge from the air

How many times have you travelled over this bridge? The Chepstow to Monmouth road is one of our favourites, winding in between England and Wales through the wooded Wye Valley.

Bigsweir Bridge is one of these crossings, with Wales (and Monmouthshire) on the left, and England (Gloucestershire) on the right. Built in 1827, you can see the original toll house just to the left of the bridge. Nowadays it is thankfully free to cross!

If you follow the lane you can see on the left beneath the trees you'll eventualy reach the Michelin starred The Whitebrook - restaurant with rooms. The lane on the far right heading up the hill is part of the Offa's D**e Path, so this bridge is quite a popular photo location.

There are plenty of ways to get around including The Robin minibus as well as the Forest of Dean Cycle Centre - Forestry England.
