Carrie’s Gate is a real home from home traditional, but modern, stone built miners cottage enjoying stunning views across Lake Coniston, one of Lakeland’s quietest and most iconic waters, made famous by Donald Campbell's Bluebird We lived and worked in Coniston until circumstances meant we had to leave the village almost 20 years ago, (it seems only yesterday!) but we couldn’t bear to sell, and so
Carrie’s Gate became a holiday home for the first time since 1890. Perched above the traditional village of Coniston, our traditional slate cottage enjoys wonderful views across one of Lakeland’s quietest and most iconic waters, made famous by Donald Campbell’s Bluebird and the setting for Swallows & Amazons. Set against a backdrop of dramatic mountain scenery, Carrie’s Gate is ideal for couples and families alike and for years has provided the perfect location for romantic getaways, family adventures and walkers of all ages and abilities, with Coniston Old Man and the surrounding fells quite literally on your doorstep. We’ve made big changes in 2020 with our Kitchen & Utility ‘makeover’, the cottage offers exceptionally comfortable accommodation including a traditional multi fuel stove as a focal point in the cosy lounge for tired dogs to snooze in front of after a hard days walk, with the views across Coniston Water from the front windows never far away. A sunny garden just across the lane from the cottage gives you the option to dine al-fresco and watch the sun set slowly over the lake. The excellent facilities create a genuine ‘home from home’ experience to ensure you’ll get the very best out of your stay including high quality broadband so younger members of your party will be happy to know Instagram and Facebook are still available. There’s a Smart TV with free OnDemand and Netflix accounts, plus a great selection of books and games for those rainy days. Just for the record, I’m afraid there is no great historical or romantic significance to how Carrie’s Gate got its name, but it will always remind us of some of the times we have shared with our friends here. We have one friend who enjoys a drink, and after (more than) a few always seems to struggle to get our names right and ends up calling us Kari and Gate instead of Gary and Kate and so the name was born!
