Conwy County Borough Council Local Housing Strategy 2024-2029

Conwy’s 2018 Local Housing Strategy vision is for ‘People in Conwy to have access to affordable, appropriate and good quality accommodation that enhances their quality of life’.

Much has been achieved since we published our strategy in 2018. For example, we have delivered 523 units of affordable housing via the Social Housing Grant programme, bought 162 empty properties back into use and developed Conwy’s rapid rehousing plan.

It has been a challenging environment with the Coronavirus Pandemic, changes in legislation and the increase in the cost of living The Local Housing Strategy Key Achievements 2023 report sets out how we addressed the challenges we faced and details what we have achieved against the planned targets. Delivering solutions was something that could have only be achieved by working in the effective partnership across both the public and private housing sectors.

The Local Housing Strategy has been developed and, is owned by the Conwy Strategic Housing Partnership. We want continue to make the best use of our joint skills and resources; to ensure that our business objectives remain aligned; and ultimately, continue to do the best we can to improve the housing options in Conwy County into 2024 - 2029. To do this we are asking for your feedback on the key achievements report and what we need to do in the future, a link to the survey is available below. The survey will close on 15 October 2023.

Good Morning,

In July last year, The Conwy Town Council, with funding from The Welsh Government through the Conwy County Council, launched a project to engage the communities of Conwy, Deganwy and llandudno Junction in the creation of a Town Plan.

A Town Plan is a future vision of how we want our town to develop over the coming years and covers areas including Community facilities, Buildings, Housing, Tourism, Business and Economy, Transport, Wellbeing and the Environment. Put simply, without one it will be far more difficult to get Government grant funding for any projects that we, as residents, believe are important for the development of our community.

From this initial successful launch significant work was carried out and a draft comprehensive “Kickstarter Plan” was created.

However, our communication and feedback to the community has been poor or non existent. Please accept my sincere apologies for this.

This Spring, the Town Council asked if I would lead an initiative to re-engage the community in this project. Whilst understanding the magnitude of the challenge, I accepted because I am passionate about making our beautiful part of the world even better.

My name is Pete George, an ordinary resident living within the walls of Conwy and we have set up a small working group (2/3 residents, 1/3 Town and County Councillors) the breath life back into the Town Plan.

We need your help, your ideas, your priorities and your enthusiasm.

To relaunch this initiative we are holding two Community Engagement Events where we will explain what we have done, what the draft plan contains and most importantly gain your input into turning this draft into something that truly represents the communities wishes.

The first event will take place on Tuesday 1 August, 6pm to 8pm at St Mary’s Hall in Conwy

The second event is on Thursday 10 August, 6pm to 8pm at the Memorial Hall in Llandudno Junction.

We will plan an event in Deganwy in the near future.

Whilst you will be welcome at either event fit might be more relevant to attend the venue closer to where you call home.

You are welcome just to call in but it would help us to manage the logistics if you signed up through the EVENTBRITE website. Simply search for Conwy Town Plan and you should find both events listed.

I really hope you can join us and look forward to seeing you at one of the events

With kind regards

Pete George
Chair, Conwy Town Plan Working Group
