My clients and I spent a while today studying the historic toll charges on suspension bridge realising we hadn't a clue what a Berlin, a Calash, landau, Phaeton, Gig etc. were! any more than those Victorians would have known what a 4x4, EV or kit car were.

John Gibson was a notable Welsh sculptor of the 19th century, celebrated for his classical marble sculptures.

Born in 1790 in Gryffin, Conwy, he trained in Liverpool before moving to Rome to study under the Italian neoclassicist Antonio Canova. Influenced by ancient Greek and Roman art, Gibson's work, including the famous 'The Tinted Venus,' is known for its idealised beauty and innovative use of colour on marble. Spending most of his career in Rome, his sculptures attracted admiration from the era's aristocracy.

This is a memorial for John Gibson located in Conwy Church. Thank you to Conwy Archive Service / Diwylliant Conwy Culture for sharing this photograph with us. To discover more about Conwy's artists from the past, feel free to visit the archive or browse their collection on our website.👇

Before the season starts I like to have a quick refresh of the main sites I will visit with clients. There are a lot of advantages to visiting in the winter. 1. You see the structure ie. the colours of the bark or the lovely 3D nature of a garden on a hill with the giant sequoias - did you know we have half a million of them in the UK - watch out California! 2. The water features look great 3. The Rhododendron are starting and Bodnant have a new great trail explaining everything from the Victorian hybridisation to the new work being done by the team on micropropagation.

Quality Tours by Qualified Guides

I’ve been a mountain leader for over 30 years and an Official Wales tourist Guide for 20 years and have worked in tourism all that time taking clients on walks, hikes by the coast, on the hills and through the historic towns of North Wales. I have partners in other qualified guides and we offer a full range of tours. With us you can explore the Castle, walk the town walls, stroll along Conwy Quay learning how locals make a living from the fishing tackle and lobster pots on the quayside and photograph the cute little Smallest House in Britain we’ll give you advice on what to do with the rest of your time in Wales. We also run Tasting Tours - Conwy has long had a foodie reputation and our food tour is a splendid mixture of history spiced up with visits to specialist food venues.
