Are you planning to climb Yr Wyddfa this winter? Don’t forget about our winter ground conditions reporting service that has just re-commenced for the season.

Every Tuesday and Friday until April, an experienced contractor will climb to the summit of Yr Wyddfa to assess the ground conditions and report back on the Wyddfa Live website.

Having this information to hand will hopefully help you plan and decide whether you have the skills, equipment and necessary experience to deal with the conditions on the mountain.

Nestled on the north coast of Wales, Conwy Castle stands as a monumental testament to medieval architecture and military prowess. Commissioned by King Edward I during his conquest of Wales, the construction of Conwy Castle began in 1283 as part of a series of fortifications intended to establish English dominance over the region. Designed by master architect James of St. George, the castle’s imposing walls and strategic location on a rocky outcrop served both as a defensive stronghold and a symbol of Edward’s authority.

Conwy Castle is a marvel of medieval engineering, comprising eight massive towers and two fortified gateways, all enclosed by high, curtain walls. Its construction utilized local limestone and sandstone, contributing to the castle's resilience against the elements. The completion of Conwy Castle in 1289 marked a significant point in the architectural history of Britain, showcasing innovative design and robust construction techniques that were ahead of its time.

Historical Significance

Conwy Castle has played a pivotal role in Welsh history, not only as a military fortress but also as a seat of power and governance. Its commanding presence affirms its role as a cornerstone of Edward I’s "iron ring" of castles encircling Snowdonia, designed to suppress Welsh uprisings. Over the centuries, Conwy Castle witnessed numerous sieges and battles, most notably during the revolt of Madog ap Llywelyn in 1294-1295 when it provided sanctuary to the besieged English forces.

The castle's strategic importance persisted through the centuries, particularly during the English Civil War in the 17th century when it was occupied by Royalist forces. Following the war, however, Conwy Castle was partially dismantled to prevent further military use, yet its majestic ruins continue to inspire awe and admiration.

Echoes Through the Walls

Beyond its architectural grandeur and historical significance, Conwy Castle is steeped in captivating tales and legends that echo through its ancient halls. Visitors often speak of the haunting presence felt within the castle’s stone walls, with stories of ghostly apparitions intertwined with the site’s rich history. Legend has it that the spirit of an unsettled monk wanders the castle corridors, guarding secrets from centuries past.

The castle also serves as a backdrop for cultural narratives, including the tale of Llywelyn the Great, Prince of Gwynedd, and his descendants, whose struggles against English domination have become legendary. These stories enrich the historical experience of Conwy Castle, transforming it from a static monument into a living tapestry of Wales’ tumultuous past.

A Must-Visit Destination

Conwy Castle’s combination of historical intrigue, architectural brilliance, and mythic allure makes it a must-visit for history enthusiasts and curious travelers alike. Designated as a World Heritage site, the castle offers an immersive journey into medieval history and a poignant reminder of Wales’ vibrant cultural heritage.

Whether you are exploring its towering battlements, imagining the lively scenes of yesteryear, or simply taking in the breathtaking views of Snowdonia and the Conwy Estuary, a visit to Conwy Castle is an unforgettable experience. For those journeying near the picturesque town of Llandudno, the echoes of the past beckon irresistibly from this iconic fortress, inviting you to delve into the depths of time.
