In the night of 18 August 1993, a major part of the Chapel Bridge caught fire.
The two bridgeheads and the Water Tower were all that could be saved hence the remainder of the bridge was rebuilt in a record eight months.
The “new” Chapel Bridge was reopened on April 14, 1994.
It was the first major incident that Central Switzerland had ever experienced such so many people in the country were moved around the world.
During its early days, the incredible 650 years old Chapel Bridge served as a means of crossing the river on foot, but also as part of the town’s fortifications.
Chapel Bridge - Lucerne's landmark, is considered to be Europe's oldest covered bridge.
Viewed from the air, the Chapel Bridge zigzags as it passes the impressive Water Tower which appears to bind the town together.

In Latin, the term, Ferragosto comes from Feriae Augusti which means the Day of Augustus and also has deeper roots in the festival of Consualia, dedicated to Consus, the god of the harvest and the granary. The festival celebration used to last for a month until Emperor Augustus set it on one day. Coincidentally, the Catholic Church moved the one day to August 15 as its also the day for Assumption of Mary.
So if you are in Italy around the time, be aware that towns are noticeably quieter, and many businesses, museums and restaurants are closed for up to two weeks as the Italians travel for their summer holiday.

📌BRIEF HISTORY OF MYSTRAS In 1825, the Albanian Turks slaughtered the population in Mystras and ruined the area, which was later abandoned. Finally, it was set free a few years later and formed part of the first Greek state. In 1831, King Otto founded the new city of Sparta 9 km away and this resulted in the final decline and abandonment of Mystras. The medieval ruins of Mystras also known as ‘the Wonder of Morea’, was listed as a UNESCO protected site in 1989. This breathtaking location with such historical importance until recently received little attention from local and international visitors. Apparently, nineteenth century travellers overlooked Mystras as it was mistaken for the ruins of Ancient Sparta, which we can also visit on another site entirely not far from Mystras. Mystras is famous for its products too. In Neos Mystras, the village a few meters from the castle, you can find high-quality local products like virgin olive oil and delicious honey unique to the area. A trade market will hold from August 27th to September 2nd, 2024 where you can buy local products in Mystras with deep roots in the past.
