I am a local lady who has a small business called Heaven Scent and I work alongside the elderly and their families in Crawley and surrounding areas

After working for large charity organisation it became so apparent that the demand for help for the elderly is not available easily.

On the flip side of this I decided to change things in my community and that’s when I opened up my business in the area I am so happy to tell you that it’s so successful and has been running for a good few years.

I offer a bespoke and totally personal
service to my clients ranging from companionship , leisure trips , small
meal preparation, domestic duties, assistance to appointments , shopping together or on their behalf and much more depending on my clients requests , wishes and needs.

I also offer relative sitting and a check in service for families that want a break or a holiday or busy working or just want to feel that they would like to just have a night at home and go home straight after work , let me take that worry from you, let me pick up the milk or get the prescription or the food shop .or have a chat and a cup of tea with your loved one

The beauty of Heaven Scent is that it’s a private service meaning I can spend time with my clients for one or two hour slots weekly or fortnightly and can mould the package to exactly what’s required by each individual and the only face they will see is mine , there will not be different people coming and going, which can cause anxiety and un certainty in the older generation.

At Christmas time it becomes even more obvious that loneliness is a huge problem , lack of friends and family, isolation and housebound clients.

I know that during 2022 and all the previous years of working in the community I bring companionship , help around the home, transport to appointments , leisure trips out, keeping homes clean and so much more and have bought a smile to many faces amd helped out taking the pressure away from
families who are busy trying to juggle their own life whilst also trying to look after elderly family

When I first opened my small business obviously I wanted to give it a name , Heaven Scent seemed the perfect name , because if I had £1 for all the times I have been called an Angel , or you are truly Heaven Scent I could buy a castle !

There is a lot of pressure on people to enjoy themselves during the holidays. The season is supposed to be merry and bright, but many elders feel increasingly isolated and unhappy this time of year.

While aging can bring wisdom and experience, there are inevitable losses that even the healthiest seniors face. Loved ones and friends fall ill and pass away. Energy and mobility levels often decrease, resulting in feelings of lost independence and opportunities. Neighborhoods change over time, leaving even those well enough to remain in their own homes feeling lonely and disconnected from their communities.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), socially isolated older adults are at higher risk for depression. The focus on family, friends and togetherness during this time of year can actually bring melancholy feelings to the forefront for many elders. It’s more important than ever to be supportive of and attentive to our loved ones, but in ways that keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible.

If you believe that an aging parent, friend or neighbor may be feeling lonely or depressed, there are steps you can take to help lift their spirits. You are probably busy with adapting your own holiday plans and traditions, but we must remind ourselves what the holiday season is truly about. Simplifying some things will allow you to focus on what really matters: the important people in your life.

I find this time of year a particularly hard one looking after my clients especially those on their own loneliness is a big problem in my day to day life of Heaven Scent and my visits around the community of Crawley and surrounding areas we assume that they will be packing up for the Christmas break to go and stay with friends and family sadly this is not always the case

Last week was a very busy week putting up decorations and making cakes and going to the supermarkets to buy Christmas presents for my clients families and on the other side of the coin I came across sadness and loneliness which always seems so much more apparent at this time of year

I will always endeavour to gain a smile and give a gentle touch to my clients as simple things go such a long way

Why do seniors feel the cold?

There are a number of reasons that older people can feel cold frequently, even in a temperature that you or I would feel comfortable in.

One reason for feeling the cold is that as we age, our metabolic rate decreases, which means we struggle to maintain a comfortable temperature.

Medicine and some prescribed drugs can have the effect of decreasing our body temperature. – for example, ‘beta blockers’ can lower the heart rate, which in turn, reduces the blood pressure in our bodies, especially the circulation to hands and feet.
Undiagnosed conditions, such as diabetes or hypertension could be a reason why they feel cold all the time, sometimes feeling cold all the time is the reason that people actually see and doctor and get a diagnosis of diabetes or hypertension.
As we get older we can see a decrease in blood circulation as the walls of the blood vessels loose elasticity.
The fat layer under the skin can decrease, leaving us feeling colder.
Thyroid conditions and high cholesterol can also reduce blood flow, affecting the bodies ability to regulate temperature.

A lower metabolic rate is perhaps one of the most common reason for elderly people feeling the cold.

A metabolic rate is the rate at which our bodies can burn calories. As we get older, this metabolic rate can slow down, which reduces how quickly we process the energy we put into our bodies. This energy is what human bodies use to fuel our body temperature and how we stay warm. If the metabolic rate slows down, we are more likely to feel cold more often.

As I carry out my visits to my clients each week I often come across the above in many cases I always make sure that I make them as comfortable as possible and encourage blankets and warm socks and slippers and hot drinks and of course make sure food has been eaten as very often with short term memory loss , dementia and altzheimers these actions are not carried out.

More often than not, elderly people still struggle along on their own, even when things get too much they can be reluctant to ask for any help.

This can lead to them living a restricted lifestyle, in fear of causing an inconvenience to their family and friends, ending up lonely and depressed.

By offering a helping hand , I am not only helping people physically but also mentally. They will benefit from my physical help of shopping, picking up a prescription or driving them for a lovely trip out, light domestic help around the home or even preparing lunch/dinner and doing a puzzle together.

This is paramount for mental health and especially in the cold winter months and early dark evenings that are upon us

Good morning !

Over these last couple of weeks I have been particularly involved in helping the families of my clients that have to go to work but have loved ones at home that they are worried about leaving alone for long periods of time due to not being safe or being un well or being lonely, forgetting to eat and drink and take medication.

The services that I offer really do take the pressure and worry away from the family as I am able to spend a good amount of time with their loved ones rather than a very quick visit from NHS care staff as they are on a very tight time schedule and just can’t offer the time.

I have carried out a range of activities from companionship, preparing meals , helping with crosswords and jigsaws and much much more over the last couple of weeks.

I have taken my clients out spending time walking among or simply looking at trees and flowers and all of the beautiful things that nature offers us which lowers blood pressure and reduces the stress-related hormones cortisol and adrenaline. Improves mood — Researchers have found that nature simply makes us happy!!

Benefits of Drinking Water

Getting enough water every day is important for your health. Drinking water can prevent dehydration, a condition that can cause unclear thinking, result in mood change, cause your body to overheat, and lead to and kidney stones.

I will always try to encourage water drinking in the extreme heat and generally as it’s so important to consume water daily . Often I find that my clients are in a lot of pain and discomfort from medical conditions and to get up from the chair is often very painful and the result of this is lack of fluids and even food

I make many calls a day to my elderly clients popping in to check on them and to make sure they are fed and hydrated in the extreme heat.

This week I called in on them with extra visits for peace of mind that they were drinking and not suffering any effects from the heat, this also gave the families peace of mind that I was doing my rounds and checking in on their loved ones as they had to work or had commitments and could not visit.

Hello !

I have had a busy week with my clients and I have focused on fresh air and change of scenery this week As the weather has been nice I have been encouraging my clients to potter in their gardens with me as sometimes it’s easy to sit for long periods of time with the same surroundings around them and there are so many good benefits from even a little gentle potter in the garden

Stress-relief and self-esteem are gained from regular gardening sessions, while immunity, heart health and brain health are improved. Risk of stroke and Alzheimer's are reduced, and even mental health is significantly improved. Gardening really is a labour of love that reaps benefits in all areas.

I have been very pleased with the amount of clients that have really enjoyed the fresh air and having company and companionship this week and whilst everyone is not as able and as fit, for those who have more mobility problems we took a chair into the garden so they can still join in and can do bits and pieces while seated.

There’s a good chance you’ll
become the morning person you’ve always wanted to be -- in your 60s. Our sleeping patterns can shift as we age, so we get sleepier earlier and wake up earlier. That seems to work out well. One study showed that even though folks over 65 tend to wake up during the night, most said they regularly get a good night’s sleep.

This brings me on to the subject of getting older and our bodies changing, tasks becoming more and more difficult, confidence begins to fade and generally starting to feel the strain of activities and chores that we used to be able to do without even thinking about.

I come across this a lot with my clients and the sadness it causes them when they feel they can no longer cope with domestic duties heavy shopping driving, and hobbies and much more

This is when Heaven Scent comes into its own. I become a part of peoples lives to help, encourage, support, listen, and brighten spirits that have become low, boost self esteem and offer companionship. I help with hobbies and trips out to beautiful places for fresh air and a change of scenery, accompany to a class or a social gathering, assisted transport , dropped off home to the door and make sure they are safe inside and have everything they require cup of tea and something to eat or whatever it maybe.

As the weather is improving the requests are now coming through from the families of my clients as they are beginning to sort out and book their holidays and are worried that their parents or family members will be alone for long periods of time

This is another service that I offer that I call relative sitting for times when the families are away or have prior engagements and just can’t get to check on their family member I will take all of that worry away from them so they can relax on their holiday or go away for the weekend and not have to worry I will take care of it all

Hello everyone on this very wet and windy Sunday 🍁🍂🐿

First and foremost, it is important to remember that the aging process is a natural part of life. Nobody wants to think of their parents becoming old or unable to continue to do the things that make them lead happy lives. As your parents get older, however, some change is inevitable.

One of the most important things to remember when caring for an elderly family member is to take care of yourself too. Families often do not know how to deal with the stress of caring for elderly parents and eventually find themselves up against emotional and mental strain, especially while trying to juggle your own busy life and family.

All of the above I come across only to often and each family really thinks that it’s only them that are struggling and I can’t stress enough to them that’s certainly not the case.

This is were I step in ….

Relative sitting !

After a very nice relaxing week in Devon I am back to work today to look after a client all day who’s Daughter wanted to go out for the day but did not want to leave her elderly Mum all day alone

Peace of mind for her Daughter that I am with her Mum and she is not
alone for long periods of time and that I will make her lunch and her dinner and drinks and she can enjoy her day out knowing her Mum is safe

Painting !

I had the privilege of having a new client come aboard to Heaven Scent this week for a weekly one hour visit

I really enjoyed our time together as she used to paint at a younger age and is now finding it hard to hold a paint brush and control it due to having arthritic hands, so we painted together and I guided her and I assisted with the painting.

This made us both happy and I could see that she was enjoying being able to paint and have the companionship and to have me to give her back the confidence she needed

Many older adults lose mobility due to conditions like stroke, severe arthritis, or injuries from falls.

When that happens, activities and hobbies they used to enjoy might now be too difficult.

But loss of mobility doesn’t mean the end of good times. There are many ways to have fun, boost mood, and stay engaged in the world without needing to move around too much.

Today, with a client of mine we went into the garden and while they were seated we cleared and re potted plants for the garden and they were still able to be involved even being seated due to mobility problems

This is a great way for people to feel they still have some Independence whilst getting fresh air and seeing the garden wildlife and sharing stories and memories and laughs with me

Companionship at its best , all in a days work !

As people are starting to go on holiday again and enjoy staycations & vacations , some are worried about leaving their elderly loved one’s on their own while they enjoy a break

I often relative sit for peace of mind for the families to check in and make sure all is ok and a drink has been made and food has been eaten and a friendly face has been seen and the day has been broken up for people who are lonely and housebound.

This enables families to be able to enjoy their break and relax knowing I am around.

Loneliness and Isolation !

I touch on this subject quite frequently because I really did not realise until I became to work closely with the elderly community of Crawley just how apparent loneliness is.

Isolation and loneliness has not just arisen with the covid 19 pandemic it is there 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for some. Visiting and caring for those in this situation is one of the most rewarding services that I offer and makes such a difference to peoples lives.
