Firstly excuse the shockingly poor photos!! All a bit too far away and not much time. Today on our livestock checks we were lucky enough to spot a Little Regret in the river meadow. Over the years we have seen them fairly often but mainly in the Autumn and Winter and I haven't seen one for a couple of years. Today he flew up into a tree and was soon followed by a grey heron. The egret took off and the heron sat for a few minutes. Then a second grey heron arrived and all three birds flew around a bit before heading over the fields. They were calling quite a lot. I'm unsure whether there was a territorial element to this but I do hope to see our little white visitor again soon.

So this afternoon has been busy for the alpaca boys. It's coats off day! They were very well behaved and although it might look a bit much it's actually the best and least stressful way to get the job safely done. Toe nails also clipped and teeth check. They are now all feeling so much better and SunTzu in particular is very full of beans!! .the.alpaca.shearer

Better late than never as they say! Our hay meadow is usuycut mid June but this year has been a challenge. Finally cut now so hopefully it'll be in and safely stored to feed the animals during the winter. ☺️ www.hollywaterholidays.co.uk

A little focus on our feathered friends today. Our lovely chickens are very much part of our life - they're just always there! They are nearly all rescued commercial layers and they now live the charmed life free ranging around our home, garden and fields. They always come to greet me to see if I have any corn for them and they keep us and our guests supplied with eggs. Typically our chicken eggs weigh in between 50 and 75g.
We also have a small group of rheas. 3 we raised from chicks and turned out to be all female. They are named after S.Americsm tribes and we have Maya, Yuco and Inca. They are now 2 years old. This year we took on 1 more female and a male who we have called Carib and Timba. After a somewhat unsettled start Timba has been calling his ladies and today we had our first egg! This one weighed in at a whopping 520g! www.hollywaterholidays.co.uk holidays

So in today's news, look what Iain found when he went on the rounds tonight! Viva, one of our first time mum's, has just produced the first Holly Water Longhorns calf of the year! This is also our first calf from our gorgeous bull, Tobias. It's a beautiful little heifer calf so she now needs a name. This year the pedigree names are to begin with Y so any suggestions for this little lady(or those still to come!) would be welcome! ☺️😍 www.hollywaterholidays.co.uk

This weekend has been lovely! Probably the first completely dry weekend with some added sunshine for months! I have been lucky enough to rope Iain and Jessie in to help with a touch of alpaca training and also to enjoy a couple of trips out to some of the places we are lucky to have close by. Yesterday Jessie and I managed a couple of hours for a walk at and today Iain and I enjoyed one of his birthday presents in the firm of afternoon tea at Bow garden centre. Very nice it all was too. www.hollywaterholidays.co.uk holidays

After the dreadful weather we have had I am taking hope from the Oak trees at the moment! They are definitely further out in leaf than the Ash which hasn't even started! 'Oak before Ash, we're in for a splash, Ash before Oak, we're in for a soak'. I'm reckoning that we've had the soak and just axsplash going forward would be nice. 🌞☀️🌦️ www.hollywaterholidays.co.uk

After sharing the excessive water the other day I thought I should also share a couple of signs of Spring in the sunshine! The forecast for this weekend was dreadful but nice to see the sun again today after a pretty clear day yesterday too! Please let this be the start of better weather to come. The trees are budding and the Devon banks are well scattered with our county flowers, Primroses! Beautiful. ☺️ .

The Holly Water River runs along the bottom of our fields, hence our name. It is not a huge or long river. It starts around Pennymoor, just about 5 miles from us ( admittedly probably a little further as the river goes) and is a tributary of the Creedy which it joins shortly after us. Usually the river water is not actually visible from the huts or the treehouse. Through the Autumn and Winter it will rise quickly after heavy rain and sometimes come out of its banks but generally falls quite quickly too. This year it has been incredible and almost consistently visible with the high rainfall that we have all been experiencing throughout the last few months. All I can do is apologize for the weather and look forward to some sunshine. Meanwhile I was very reluctant to leave The Beehive with its cosy fire ready for incoming guests!
