Glen Dochart and Portnellan are rich in myth and history. In ancient times, warriors Taileachd and Fingal contested for a woman's love by attempting to jump from an island to the shore of Loch Dochart. Taileachd succeeded, but Fingal failed and was beheaded by Taileachd, who vanished afterward. Fingal's headless body floated to the Falls of Dochart, and his burial site became known as 'Cill Finn' or 'Killin.' For centuries, the area remained Campbell territory, including ownership by Black Duncan of the Cowl, who built several castles. Glen Dochart was part of the Campbell’s earldom of Breadalbane until sold by Charles Campbell, after which the local castle fell into ruin. Portnellan House, initially a Victorian hunting lodge, became a farmhouse and, by the 1960s, transformed into a bed-and-breakfast, with the first holiday property built in 1980. Today Portnellan has grown into an estate boasting a mix of lodges and cottages visited by regular guests from all over the world. Create your bit of history and visit Portnellan.

Scotland's only lake

Famous as being Scotland’s only lake, rather than loch, the Lake of Menteith is in the Carse of Stirling.

There are several small islands and the largest, Inchmahome, is home to an ancient priory, that was historically visited by Robert the Bruce and acted as a refuge for Mary Queen of Scots.

The island is also well known for its wildlife, including three Spanish chestnuts, that are listed in among Scotland’s top 100 trees. Access to the island is by boat between March and September.

Occasionally in winter the lake freezes and offers the chance for the local area to host the “Bonspiel”, or Grand Match, one of few outdoor curling tournaments in Scotland.

There are many picnic spots along the lake shore, where you can admire the wonderful scenery, and the nearby Menteith Hills that have a large network of paths for walkers, trail runners and cyclists.

Climbing in Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park has a celebrated history and if you’re looking for adventure, there are plenty of opportunities to experience first-hand.

For those wishing to give climbing a try, lessons from a qualified instructor or visiting an indoor climbing wall will help you take that fist step.

For the experienced climber, the National Park offers such things as bouldering, multi pitch traditional routes, bolted sport climbing and winter classics.

MEET ROB 🎣

I have been salmon and trout fishing for over 45 years.

I developed a passion for fishing at a very early age when my Uncle Tom took me on his regular trips to Aberfeldy where I caught my first salmon under his guidance on the River Tay.

I refined my skills and improved my knowledge of rivercraft over the next 20 years, fishing all over Scotland on river and loch. I have been employed professionally as a ghillie for the last 20 years.

I have fished all over Scotland including the Tay, the Spey, the Dee, the Tweed, the Badachro System, and the River Endrick to name but a few. I spent 7 seasons as First Ghillie, and Fly Dresser for Grimersta Lodge Estate on The Isle of Lewis, where I also acted as a District Salmon Fishery Board water bailiff.

I have fished for and caught many species from around the world including Bonefish, Tarpon, Permit, Rooster Fish, Cubera Snapper, Barracuda, Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Sailfish, and two species of Marlin. I also have a Bill Fish GrandSlam under my belt from a trip to Mexico.

I can provide all tackle if required, casting tuition for the beginner, as well as an extra word of guidance for the more experienced fisher. I have excellent boat handling skills, the priority for me being my guests safety, as well as having a great fishing experience.

And even if the fish don’t bite, you just need to take a look around at the beautiful landscape that surrounds you, there really is no better place to be.
