Blackdown Yurts

Blackdown Yurts Glamping site with four yurts in a beautiful hidden valley on the edge of Devon's Blackdown Hills Combined they sleep 22.
(44)

Set within 30 acres on our smallholding between Exeter and Honiton, each authentic Mongolian yurt is tucked away in its own secluded spot, with plenty of space to explore and unwind. Providing a glamorous alternative to roughing it in a tent, our yurts are furnished with an eclectic blend of rustic and ethnic furniture. Thick Kilim rugs, fluffy sheepskins, plump cushions, a log burner and organic

bedlinen ensure your stay will be a comfortable one. With spring water on tap, solar electricity and composting loos our yurt holidays also try to be as eco-friendly as possible. For added luxury there are also hot showers and flushing toilets in the adjacent communal barn, where you will also find kitchen facilities including fridge-freezers, a microwave, kettle, toaster and hot water for washing up alongside a large dining table, sofa area and large woodburner. Blackdown Yurts is a perfect location for family and friends to get together. Willow our small yurt sleeps up to 4, Badger, Woodpecker and Buzzard each sleep up to 6. Ask about hen, stag and birthday parties. We can recommend local produce and can cater for up to 22 in the form of a paella tailored to your requirements. By day, hundreds of footpaths, riverbanks, ancient woodlands, villages and churches are just waiting to be explored. Enjoy the food and drink at one the excellent nearby local pubs or restaurants. Or why not just breathe in the fresh country air and relax into a new rhythm of life, free from televisions, computers and telephones…

As the day draws to an end and the sun gives way to solar lamps and lanterns, light the barbeque or use your own field kitchen to prepare a meal to be enjoyed around a roaring outdoor fire under the stars. Ask Katie if you'd like to join a bat walk or borrow a bat detector to listen to some of our night-time visitors. So whether you are looking for the ultimate glamping (glamorous camping) experience, a romantic getaway or just a fun break away with your family you can find everything you need at Blackdown Yurts. Click to watch our photofilm and experience our yurt holidays for yourself. In addition to our wonderful yurts we also have four beautifully restored thatched cottages adjacent to the main farmhouse that are available for self-catering breaks. So if you're looking for something a bit more luxurious or just some extra accommodation for the family why not take a look at www.halsbeerfarm.co.uk or contact Katie via the contact page for more details.

Gorgeous gazanias and geraniums in Badger and Woodpecker’s deck planters this year. 🌺

I’d not seen gazanias before I don’t think but I love them and they are drought tolerant which is handy when it’s this hot and you forget to water them regularly!

This made me chuckle this evening.

Sorry for being a bit quiet on the yurt socials lately. I’ve had a busy week hosting a painting course in our Halsbeer Farm Holiday Cottages at the other end of the farm.

We do have some last minute availability for stays over the next fortnight and there are still some gaps in the summer holidays but bookings are coming in steadily at the moment so if you want to visit us this season take a look at the calendars ASAP.

Have a great weekend all. I shall mostly be sitting down.

There is a reason why walking amongst nature is most people’s best advice when depression strikes.
Because walking in nature is a return to ‘home’.

You are not a lover of nature, or a fan of nature, you ‘are’ nature.

You are as much nature as the trees in your garden and the bees on your picnic.

You were designed to live your days out in the wild with your fellow creatures and plants but progress, humanity, had different plans for us all.

And so we exist day-to-day, in our homes, but never ‘home’.

The quickest route back to self, to inner peace, is bare feet on grass, arms around trees, head in the clouds and heart in a forest.

Put your bones in water, whenever you can, smell each flower you see and crumble dirt between your tired-of-typing fingers.

You are nature, go home once in a while.

It will bring you much you didn’t even know you were missing.

Hooray. We’ve scored a hat-trick!

Our glamping site has been awarded Gold by Visit England for the third year in a row.

The assessor Teresa said that “Blackdown Yurts continue to present to a high standard and provide a very comfortable standard of accommodation.

“The yurts are set amongst beautiful surrounding countryside and enjoy a peaceful outlook across the
fields. Internally, they are colourful and neatly arranged to provide guest comfort.

“The well arranged outdoor space provides an excellent al fresco living area for the warmer days and the fire pits add to guest comfort for the cooler evenings.

“The site is well maintained and following this year’s assessment visit maintains the requirements of the Quality Assessed Glamping Scheme. The Gold Award is also retained and is very well deserved.”

What a great way to start the week! Happy Monday everyone.

So pleased to have been contacted this week by the winner of the raffle prize we donated to SNUG, a charity which supports families of babies born prematurely in Devon.

We've managed to fit the family into Willow Yurt for their stay in September. We will pop one of the single beds away beneath the other to make space for a cot as they are bringing their little one with them who is now a busy 2-year-old but was born very early at only 24 weeks.

So delighted that the stay has gone to a family who really deserve it. I know from my sister's experience how hard it is to have a baby born prematurely and spend all that time in intensive care.

Solstice blessings one and all. This is so beautiful. I had a moment this morning when I saw the barn owl flying soon after dawn in the early morning light. Donna puts it so well. Capture those special moments in your mind to conjure up later when you need them.

Come and take “some time out from the race”,
“fill your stores with joy and being” and
“capture snapshots for your heart”.

Perfect. You know where we are. Light and love to you. X

Summer solstice is upon us
we are halfway through this year
take a beat, retreat, reflect and pause
to see your journey clear

you have toiled enough to warrant
some time out from the race
feel the tension on your shoulders
breathe it out, relax your face

let the light infuse your soul
let the warmth into your bones
let the easy months take hold
let the winter weight be gone

fill your stores with joy and being
capture snapshots for your heart
they will fuel your winter fires
they will permeate the dark

It is now the living’s easy
so let this truth be true
you are worn and you are weary
let the busy melt from view

Summer solstice is upon us
give it up to boundless days
let the summer breeze drift through
and carry you away.

We are delighted to have donated a two night stay in one of our yurts to this raffle being run by Exeter-based charity SNUG this weekend.

SNUG stands for Supporting Neonatal Users and Undergraduates and provides support to families of neonatal babies born sick or prematurely in Devon, by providing support both in hospital on Neonatal wards, and in the community where they provide meet ups for parents and their baby to attend, as well as providing online support.

It’s a cause close to my heart as my nephew Jasper was born very prematurely back in 2006 at just 26 weeks weighing only 2.2lb. Without the expertise and support of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Norwich where my sister lives he wouldn’t be the fantastic 17 year old he is today.

You can enter the raffle online until 9pm tomorrow (Friday 14th June) or visit their fancy dress parade in Exeter Quay from 1pm-4pm this Saturday 15th June. Good luck!

Well... look what we have here.... ANOTHER holiday up for grabs in our SNUG Raffle!

Blackdown Yurts have given us a two night stay in one of their gorgeous yurts!

All you need to do is buy a raffle ticket (or ten!) for a chance to win it

They can be purchased online at the link below OR come on down to our Exeter Parade this Saturday to buy some tickets and join in the fun!

Wow wow wow! 🦉

Big thanks to half term guest Roger Braddick for sharing these amazing images of our resident barn owl with me today and for allowing me to share them with you too.

Roger and his wife first stayed with us in 2018 and since 2020 they have returned every year for a long weekend with their children and grandchildren, booking all four yurts. And yes they have rebooked for next year already!

I did see the barn owl myself flying over our front fields at the other side of the farm a yesterday. Check out our stories to see the video I managed to sn**ch.

I’m off to see the film of Wilding next week with a Q&A with Isabella Tree. Hoping to pick up some tips but we’re evidently not doing too badly in attracting the wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled when you stay.

Felix found a little fawn in the field. If you find one, don’t worry, they aren’t abandoned, merely left safe in a little gap in the grass to hide while mum is foraging. Best thing to do is leave it alone and its mum will come back. When we went to check on this one later it had been collected.

It’s been like an episode of Springwatch around here lately. The barn owls are back busily hunting to feed their newly hatched chicks, dodging crows trying to mob them for their catch.

Baby blue t**s are fledging out of their nest boxes near the house.

And guests arriving yesterday saw a fox cub on the driveway to the cottages!

Need some inspiration of things to do on your holiday? Look no further. 🦢🦢🦢

Our latest blog is a Top Ten in and around Tiverton, the district town of Mid-Devon and an attractive market town on the banks of the River Exe.

There is plenty to see and do, especially this year with a swan trail around the town to get you oriented and the 50th anniversary celebrations of the fabulous horse drawn barge on the gorgeous Grand Western Canal.

Read our top ten (in no particular order I might add and I seem to have managed to squish at least 18 places to visit, eat and shop into a Top 10. Well done me!) and see more photos here:

And if you have any suggestions of top places I've missed out then do let me know!

Plus don’t forget you can save 10% on May 2024 stays at Blackdown Yurts with discount code SAVE10 when booking.

Beautiful young roe deer in Blackborough churchyard this morning. The churchyard (there is no longer a church) is intentionally left wild to benefit wildlife. Seems to be working.

31/08/2019

Today we said a fond farewell to the Wonder Woman who is Maresa Freyre.

Maresa arrived with us at the start of June as a volunteer from the organisation and quickly became part of our family and an indispensable help around the yurts and farm for the whole of our busy summer season. She pretty much single handedly managed yurt changeovers as well as cleaning, gardening, painting, trench digging and looked after the place while we had a fortnight’s holiday. Anything we asked of her she turned her hand to with a beautiful broad smile and a hugely warm heart.

Although we are sad she has gone we are also grateful to have had her in our lives for the summer and wish her every health and happiness in her future wanderings wherever in the world she may go.

Muchas gracias mi amiga You are a truly beautiful person. We will miss you.
