Check out the amazing Gaze stabilisation of Aldo our Common Kestrel!

Birds of prey have many vertebrae and muscles in their necks that allow them to appear to lock their head into position when hovering, diving, focussing on a target or when perching on a moving branch or wire. By being able to hold their heads perfectly still even when the body is in motion, means that they can process high resolution images of their environment at speed, helping them navigate their territory and spot prey and predators.

Like most birds of prey, Flynn our Peregrine Falcon uses his keen eyesight to help him find his prey and navigate the world. Rather than using all of his senses like we do, his eyesight is his main source of stimulus!

This is because they are said to have eyesight that is 8 times better than a humans! Why would you need to use your other senses when your eyes are so good?

Living their life at such high speed means they also have to see at this speed too so they are continually taking in and processing information much quicker than how we do.

Camouflage is a crucial part of survival for many animals. Whether it be hiding from potential threats or concealing whereabouts during a hunt, it can be the difference between life or death.

Tawny owls, like Oak here, have fantastic camouflage thanks to having a mottling of different colours and patterns through their feathers. These differing colours break up the birds silhouette therefore making it harder to pin point exactly where the owl is!

If Oak was sat up in a tree, even on a bright summers day, it would be very difficult to pinpoint him unless he moved!

πŸ¦…Alaska is a very popular member of our flying team!πŸ¦…

The Bald Eagle is a striking species with its distinctive white head against its contrasting body, but did you know that it actually takes the Bald Eagle up to five years to achieve this iconic plumage?

As juvenile birds, the Bald Eagle sports a full-body brown colouration - including their head, tail, and beak!
As they mature they slowly start to change their colours to the one we recognise most and the one that gave them their name!

β€˜Bald’ is actually an old English term, first found in records around 1250, which meant β€œhaving a white spot” referring to the white head that the Bald Eagle is well known for!

Vultures play a vital role in all the environments they inhabit. They are nature’s clean up crew, efficiently and quickly consuming any animal that has passed away and therefore preventing the spread of disease. Additionally, vultures can physically remove disease from their habitat by consuming infected carcass and destroying it in their powerful stomach acid. Vultures can even destroy deadly diseases like Anthrax with ease, protecting the animals and people that they share their environment with.

We love introducing people to our wonderful vulture team, showing their huge characters (each one is different) and correcting common misconceptions that are portrayed about them in the media. Despite their importance in the ecosystem, they are one of the fastest declining birds in the world, with 14 out of 23 species at risk of extinction!

If you love vultures, or enjoy learning about these beautiful birds, please share our vulture posts and spread the message that these wonderful creatures deserve saving!

Happy New Year when the time comes for all of us at WOW!
We would like to say a HUGE thank you to all our loyal customers for your support throughout the past year! Whether you have visited us, attended an event, or participated in an experience or donated you have all helped us continue to do what we do and we are incredibly grateful for your support!

2024 has been a rollercoaster. We have had lows with severe storm damage, goodbyes to some beloved team members Maulder, Annie, vulture chick, Colorado and Venus and the news that two of our regular customers Stephen and Emily Tooth tragically passing away.

We have had highs, with a busy year for experiences, fully booked Owl Evenings, successfully Carcass feeds and Reptile and Raptor Days. Our Photography Mornings were held in our local woodlands and have produced some stunning images, Creative Hub Scotland the studio was up and running this year which meant our Studio Days have vastly improved. We have had Zeke our Saker Falcon and Nevis our Golden Eagle taking part in demos for the first time, welcomed newbies into the collection in the form of our Black Chested Buzzard Eagles and White Bellied Sea Eagles (in collaboration with Elite Falconry). We received our first grant which aided some of the new builds that you will see in the centre and managed to finally pair our Critically Endangered RΓΌppell’s Griffon Vultures, Gandalf and Radagast!

We also had some surprises too in the form of Cricket’s miraculous return after an equipment failure and one of Ana’s videos going viral and ending up on Columbian news!

We also want to thank everyone who has liked, followed, shared our social media posts, this really does help highlight our work and garner more support for what we do. 2025 is going to be a tough one with lots of plans for refurbishment and a few new builds but we are excited to keep heading toward our goals even if it will be hard work!

We wish everyone the best for 2025 and can’t wait to welcome you all back when we reopen!

Many species of birds of prey bob their heads up and down when perched, this behaviour is thought to help them judge distances and aid with depth perception. By building up a 3D image of their environment, this makes navigation of their territory easier and aids with highlighting their prey in vegetation.

Here is Mouse our American Kestrel showing off her head bobbing behaviour when out in the field.

Birds of prey are generally solitary animals and this often surprises us as humans are a social species. Human’s use touch as a way of showing affection and strengthen bonds between family, friends and partners but it is very different for birds of prey. Most species live on their own and only come together during the breeding season. Many species are monogamous but only spend the breeding season together to rear their young, then go their separate ways for the winter and meet back up in the spring to start the whole process again. Most species are aggressive towards others of their species, especially if an intruder as entered their territory. Other adult birds that are not potential mates are competition for resources and will often be chased off on sight.

This video shows Asha calling at Cricket our other Lanner Falcon to tell her to leave her territory. Both birds do not get access to each other but occasionally they will get a glimpse of each other in the morning when we are putting the birds out in their weathering’s. Asha and Cricket have a physical barrier between them so they can’t see each other, this allows them to share the same area but be able to relax and feel secure.

The Andean Condor is classified as a Vulnerable Species on the IUCN Red List and has a decreasing population.

There’s believed to only be 6,700 pairs of mature Andean Condors left and this is at a maximum estimate.

There are a number of reasons for the Andean Condors decline. These include poisoning, deterioration of habitat and persecution by humans.

At the moment Ana, our Andean Condor, is a fantastic ambassador species! She helps us educate everyone about her species and why they need our help.

However, once she is sexually mature around 10 years old, she is to be paired up with a male to hopefully produce some chicks to help in the decline of these beautiful birds!
