This week marks Carers Week, a UK-wide awareness campaign seeking to increase visibility of carers among decision-makers, services, employers, communities, and businesses.

As part of The King's Foundation's Integrated Health and Wellbeing Programme, we run a tea dance each month in the Pavilion at Dumfries House for older people at risk of loneliness or isolation.

We engage with East Ayrshire Council as well as local agencies and organisations to identify those most in need before offering around 100 guests an afternoon of entertainment, socialising, food and drink, and dancing!

🪡 Twelve schools from all over Scotland took part in The King's Foundation's Tartan Takeover schools' challenge at Dumfries House in a celebration of skills learned on our Future Textiles workshops.

This year, the annual Future Textiles School Challenge focused on the creation of Scottish plaid designs and garments. The team from Firrhill High School in Edinburgh most impressed a panel of judges that comprised Patrick Grant of television’s The Great British Sewing Bee, Vixy Rae of Stewart Christie, and John Sugden of Campbell’s of Beauly. The prize for the winners is a money-can’t-buy, behind-the-scenes tour of Stewart Christie on the Capital’s Queen Street, which is Scotland’s oldest tailor, where pupils will have the opportunity to meet master tailors and kiltmakers.

📸 Pictured are Carrick, Queen Margaret, Firrhill and Marr pupils with their brilliant designs.

As with all the other animals on the estate, the chicks will help children on The King's Foundation's farm education programmes to learn about where their food comes from, how to look after animals, and the uses of bi-products. To learn more, email [email protected]

Eagle-eyed visitors to The Queen Elizabeth II Walled Garden on Dumfries House estate will notice a new feature adjacent to the main gate from The Maguire Arboretum.

Chris Waltho and Matthew White of Woodpecker Joinery have been hard at work in recent weeks to complete the installation of a new glasshouse at the foot of the five-acre walled garden.

The new facility houses bedding plants after they have been sown as well as 3000 herbacious perennials for the parterre borders within the walled garden. Once those have all been planted out, the indoor area with be used for "wintering" exotic palms and carrying out wet-weather jobs like painting furniture. Later this year, the Gardens team will propogate plans for projects and for sales at the stall adjacent to the Visitor Centre.

🦃 Farm Fridays!

Each week throughout May, we are marking the arrival of newborn animals to our farm.

Pied Crollwitzer turkeys are among the most popular animals on Valentin's Education Farm, as well as the most vocal.

Shetland Geese (those with the grey markings in the images here) live next to the turkeys and will eventually shelter in The Goose Hoose, which was the creation of students of The King's Foundation's programmes in traditional craft and building skills.

🐏 Farm Fridays!

On Fridays throughout May, we are celebrating the newest arrivals on the estate.

Home Farm on the Dumfries House estate is home to around 800 sheep — mainly Suffolk, Cheviot, Lleyn and cross-breeds — but there are several rare breeds, including Castlemilk Moorit, Boreray, and Shetland.

In the past few weeks, the farm team has helped deliver Moorit, Boreray, and Shetland lambs.

Wool from our estate sheep is used in The King's Foundation's education programmes here, including as insulation in interior projects by students studying building arts and crafts. 🧶

Pupils from Carrick Academy recently completed a Tote Bag workshop under the mentorship of our Future Textiles tutors in the Atelier of Dumfries House.

The group learned a range of sewing skills to create some eye-catching creations to take home.

Lesley Finlayson, art and design teacher at the school, said: "Three of the pupils had never sewed before, and it's satisfying for them to go away with new skills and something practical and useful."

🍽️ Woodlands restaurant is open on Saturday and Sunday, with availability throughout the day. A combination of local produce and internationally-inspired dishes feature across a menu of starters, mains and desserts including options for vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free diets. To book your table, call 01290 425 959 (Option 0) between 9am-5pm on weekdays.

🏞️ Visitors to the estate this weekend should also be aware that car-parking will be at a premium due to the sheer number of people expected here. The Barony Road entrance to the estate (nearest to Auchinleck) will be closed to vehicles. Access to the gardens, including The Queen Elizabeth II Walled Garden, will remain unaffected. We would advise, where possible, that visitors walk and wheel their way onto the estate. A direct path leads onto the estate from Cumnock, and footpaths in Auchinleck lead directly to the aforementioned Barony Road entrance, with the walk from Auchinleck railway station onto the estate taking just 10-15 minutes.

Due to the high level of interest, we have now released an afternoon session (from 1.30-4pm) for our Hospitality Careers Fair on Thursday 13 June.

The event will give pupils the opportunity to experience panel talks with successful professionals discussing how to get into the industry, and partake in demos and activities relating to culinary arts, barista service, butler service, food science and hospitality management.

Companies including Diageo Careers, Johnnie Walker, and representatives from the Department for Work and Pensions - DWP and Dumfries House itself will also be on hand to provide careers advice, and answer any questions. Pupils will leave the event armed with knowledge on the vast scope of employment opportunities within the industry, and the career paths available to them.

This event is open to all secondary schools across Scotland and, with only 150 free pupil tickets available, we recommend you book now at tinyurl.com/HospitalityCareersFair

One year ago today, the Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla took place at Westminster Abbey.

As Royal Founding President, His Majesty has led The King's Foundation to become a key steward of historic sites across the UK, a charity delivering life-changing education programmes, and a pioneer of sustainable placemaking initiatives around the world.

We were so proud a number of students and alumni from The King's Foundation's programmes at Dumfries House were invited to Westminster Abbey last year to witness the Coronation, and had the chance to play a part in such a historic event.

🐮 Farm Fridays!

On Fridays throughout May, we are celebrating the latest new arrivals on the estate.

Among our rare breeds on Dumfries House estate, the Vaynol cow is among the rarest, with fewer than 150 breeding animals remaining anywhere in the world. The breed is closely monitored by Rare Breeds Survival Trust, of which The King's Foundation founder His Majesty King Charles III is Patron.

This Spring, our farm team welcomed 11 Vaynol calves into the world. As with all the other animals on the estate, the Vaynols will help children on The King's Foundation's farm education programmes to learn about where their food comes from, how to look after animals, and the uses of by-products.

Guests taking part in tours and events at Dumfries House are rewarded for looking up from the grandeur of the dining table and bookshelves in The Library.

When The King's Foundation assumed stewardship of Dumfries House, the Library ceiling centrepiece of cupola glass was frosted white and then changed to red glass.

To modernise the room and reflect our ethos and training in traditional craft, we commissioned students of The King's School of Traditional Arts to create a design to replace the glass. The result is the colourful design you see here, with the glass locally-blown in Ayr.

The library was added as part of the West Wing extension to the house in the Victorian period (roughly 1898-1908), commissioned by the 3rd Marquess of Bute and designed by Robert Weir Schultz.

The room has been described as the UK's first Turkish bath and has always had Middle Eastern decoration.

Participants of our Knitwise programme, which brings local knitters together every fortnight to practise their skills, have donated more than 100 knitted nests to benefit animals such as hedgehogs and birds at Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue Centre.

The donation follows on from a project last year where the estate worked with the Rescue Centre to reintroduce three hedgehogs to a more natural setting by releasing them in The Queen Elizabeth II Walled Garden.

Today we are marking World Heritage Day, also known as the International Day for Monuments and Sites.

The King's Foundation is proud to care for many historic sites, including Dumfries House and its estate, The Castle & Gardens of Mey, Highgrove Gardens, and The Garrison Chapel in London.

Across our sites, we deliver education programmes that promote traditional arts and building skills in order to provide a highly-skilled workforce that can help to preserve the historic buildings and monuments around the UK and across the world.

What's your favourite heritage site or historic monument to visit?

One of the key draws for the many visitors who pass through Dumfries House comes in the form of striking Murano glass chandeliers.

Stemming from the Venetian island of the same name, the Murano method of glassmaking was developed in the Middle Ages and has barely changed since, characterised by highly decorative styles and the addition of elements such as copper, cobalt and manganese for added sparkle.

Typically, classic Murano chandeliers are richly coloured and feature festive design elements – something that can certainly be said for the chandelier found in the Blue Drawing Room, pictured here being cleaned by Lesley Samson of our housekeeping team.

Dating back to about 1760, it is believed to have been brought to the house by the 4th Marquess of Bute in 1909 whereupon it was electrified, with Dumfries House one of the first properties in mainland Scotland to have electricity at that time.

The Story of Dumfries House

You wouldn’t think it to look at it now, with its tranquil grounds and elegant drawing rooms, but the fate of one of Scotland’s grandest country houses hung in the balance not so long ago. It faced an uncertain future in 2007, while all of its cultural riches risked being divided up and sold off.

A royal intervention at the eleventh hour brought the drama to an end ‒ but also marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter for one of the UK’s true gems. HRH The Prince of Wales brought together heritage bodies and benefactors under the auspices of a newly-formed trust to purchase the estate, stopping truckloads of furnishings in their tracks en route to Christie's auction house in London.

Dumfries House has a fascinating history with the artefacts inside a testament to its long and illustrious past. Built in the 1750s for William Crichton Dalrymple, the 5th Earl of Dumfries, and furnished with original Thomas Chippendale furniture delivered straight from the celebrated master cabinetmaker’s workshop, the house is something of a time capsule.

The house opened to the public in 2008 following a painstaking restoration. Stunning, especially when catching the sunlight, the baronial country house is a marvel both inside and out.
