18+ years ago, we jumped into buying Redlands with absolutely no idea what we were doing but with the notion that we wanted to be around for the kids when they came in from school! Remote working wasn’t possible back in the day!

Our first years were bed and breakfast days - breakfast for 12 before the school run (kids always late!). Eggs from our own hens (THE secret to a perfect poached egg!)
Proud to be supporting local butchers and using Fife suppliers wherever we could. Road testing all the local bars and restaurants so that we could recommend to guests was tough 😝.
The KettleBridge Inn remains a firm fave of our guests.
Alan often washing and ironing linen until midnight before heading to work in Edinburgh. We’d be cleaning loos, making beds (thankful for our lovely cleaner Mrs R!) and then checking in guests who often commented how lovely it must be to have so much of the day we to ourselves after breakfast!

A real family business with Mum and Dad able to cook a full breakfast and check in guests to allow us a break - their duties even extended to rearing 6 ducklings who appeared while we were on holiday! Our kids had jobs too, from being in charge of egg collecting, chicken hut cleaning, horse feeding and breakfast service (when it involved payment of course! ) and even litter picking along Pitlessie Road!
The days of the hand written guest review in a book, telephone calls to take bookings and learning from those who’d been in the business for years and who were kind enough to pass on wisdom and top tips.

Then came the internet.
Fantastic! Our wee place in Ladybank became known to even more people worldwide. A website, online bookings, credit card machines and our little business grew again.
At last, we could outsource the laundry!

Then came apps and mobile phones, Airbnb, Booking.con, lots more competition and the emergence of the online review!
In 18 years we’ve only a few duff reviews and we are genuinely thankful that those people haven’t returned! One memorable guest complained loudly at breakfast that an owl 🦉 had kept them awake at night (I replied that I’d forgotten to switch him off before I went to bed.)
Another guest was displeased that we didn’t have a shop onsite.

2024
My reason for jotting this down? We have finally decided to retire!
We’ve enjoyed growing our business, adapting to many changes
- from guests expectations from their holiday accommodation to 😷 🦠!
We made it through and our wee business has never been busier.

So, it’s been an ideal time to hand over the reins and take time to have some short breaks and long lies ourselves. Believe me we are the easiest of guests - simply thankful that someone else has made the bed and cleaned the bathroom.

A lovely new owner will be moving in to Redlands in November and we wish them all the best - we truly have loved raising our family here and have made many special friends in the village too (you know who you all are). We hope they are made to feel as welcome as we have and will continue to support local businesses too.

We will update again once all the legal stuff is done! 🤞

Be quick to get in another break with us while we are still here - our weekends are almost gone already!!

Redlands Country Lodge is a bed & breakfast with a difference near Cupar, Fife. Our log cabin guest house is set in Ladybank in the heart of Fife, with terraced log cabin rooms, individually styled with their own entrances and ensuite shower rooms. You'll find our B&B in a countryside setting between the wee villages of Ladybank and Pitlessie, just off the A92 or A91 about 5 miles from Cupar and close to many historic towns and villages such as St. Andrews and Falkland. We're different from many B&B's in that our rooms are completely separate from the main house so you can come and go as you please whilst exploring Fife. With rates from £35pppn, you can stay for as little as one night in one room or book all 4 rooms and our WeeBothy self catering apt with family and friends. We can sleep 12-14 people.
