A Day of Firsts…

Our first encounter with the blue gentians of Upper Teesdale; our first glimpse of a black grouse (we think!) and our first sighting of Cauldron Snout beneath Cow Green Reservoir and dam wall. All amazing and rounded off perfectly with a pit stop at Bowless Visitor Centre.

Looking forward to returning in the summer as part of our Teesdale Way challenge…

Teesdale Way – Update

Middleton One Row to Newsham: A short (2.7 miles) but sweet meander through woodland, farmland and along the riverside – made all the sweeter by the warmer weather (begone, woolly hats) and the sight of spring getting into full swing.

Teesdale Way - Update

Starting on the banks of the Tees in the village of Neasham, this gentle, picturesque section of The Teesdale Way took us along farmland and through woodland back to the banks of the river at the village of Middleton One Row.

And no, it is no coincidence that there was a pub (Fox and Hounds) and an 18th-Century coaching inn (The Devonport) at both ends of our 4.75-mile hike!

Teesdale Way Update – Stockton Riverside Walk (Circular)

At just 3.6 miles, the latest section of our Teesdale Way challenge was not only short and sweet but also very different from our rural rambles upstream. Here the countryside gives way to an urban landscape which makes for an interesting and attractive change…no muddy quagmires to negotiate here!

We loved the elegant Infinity Bridge; the engineering masterpiece that is the Tees Barrage and integrated International White Water Centre, and simply watching people mess about on the river. And we enjoyed one of the best take-out coffees (ever) from San Seb Coffee operating out of a 1958 Citreon H van at the Barrage.

There were definite signs of spring popping up along the riverside but a brisk wind was blowing from the coast, hence the woolly hat!

Summer might feel far off at the moment but for those who like to think ahead, here’s confirmation of all the dates for this year’s production of KYNREN – the live-action summer spectacular at 11Arches Park just outside Bishop Auckland. Early Bird Saver Tickets are on Sale now until 19th April so, if you fancy a 10% discount, now would be a good time to get booking.

You could also make it part of a longer stay in the area, in which case, consider The Snuggery, a cute one-bed cottage in the charming village of Staindrop which is ideally located between the market towns of Bishop Auckland and Barnard Castle. DATES FOR YOUR DIARY...

A new season is winking at us - and with it a whole host of events and activities to look forward to around County Durham. Here are a few ideas to inspire and help you get your spring planning underway. The Snuggery in Staindrop sits at the very heart of them all.

BISHOP AUCKLAND FOOD FESTIVAL, the region’s annual food extravaganza takes place over the weekend of April 23-24.

On March 3, RABY CASTLE re-opens its castle to visitors while Easter sees the launch of its fabulous new adventure play area – The Plotters’ Forest.

BOWLEES VISITOR CENTRE, near High Force and Low Force waterfalls and gateway centre for Upper Teesdale and the wider North Pennines, re-opens on March 12 until late October, every day from 10am-4pm.

March 23 sees the re-opening of AUCKLAND CASTLE along with all the other attractions that make up the hugely impressive AUCKLAND PROJECT in Bishop Auckland. They include the Auckland Tower, Spanish Gallery, Mining Art Gallery and Bishop Trevor Gallery…not forgetting the historic Deer Park.

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, DURHAM CATHEDRAL, CASTLE and surrounding buildings will provide the setting for World Heritage Day celebrations on April 18. There’s a marvellous line-up of events, including music, drama and food market.

That's it for now but we'll bring you more ideas and updates over the coming weeks and months.

With the new year comes a fresh start, and Durham is ready and raring to go in 2022 with an incredible array of experiences for all to enjoy.

Check! That’s another section of our Teesdale Way challenge done. This time, it was the leisurely 4.8-mile ramble between Blackwell Golf Course and the village of Neasham, taking in the villages of Hurworth Place and Hurworth-on-Tees. Even in the depths of winter, it was a lovely meander through an array of contrasting landscapes, from golf course, woodland and farmland in the early stages, to the manicured facilities of the swanky Rockliffe Hall and pretty village greens later on.

Where to next? Still heading downriver from Neasham to Middleton-One-Row; we’re hoping to make it to the end of the trail in Redcar by winter’s end so that we can turn our attention to the unchartered territories of Upper Teesdale in the spring. Can’t wait!

You can do as much or as little of The Teesdale Way as you want but whatever you decide, The Snuggery in Staindrop is a great place to begin and end your journey. Book your stay now at

It’s mid-February and still officially winter but there are definitely signs of spring to be seen, from the slightly earlier sunrises to the daffodil shoots daring to make an appearance. With this in mind – clean slate, new life, fresh beginnings, if you like - we’ve decided to reintroduce some of the little touches which we had to remove from the cottage way back in July 2020 in order to meet Covid 19 protocols and procedures.

So, it’s welcome back to extra cushions and bed covers, a small library of books, a vast catalogue of tourist information and walking literature and, best of all from our point of view, the guest comments/feedback book. We hope to continue the tradition of making a visit to The Snuggery in Staindrop and wider County Durham as happy and enjoyable for future guests as those who have gone before.

Raby Castle is one of our favourite local haunts for a leisurely walk and excellent eatery combo.
The castle, the parkland, the wildlife, the gastronomic offerings of the Stable Café all conspire to offer up a treat for all the senses and never disappoint. Local? Well, Raby Estate’s boundary wall backs on to Langdale Beck which runs alongside the cottage so, essentially, we are neighbours!
If you’re feeling energetic you can walk the mile from cottage door to castle entrance; it’s a great way to soak up the views of this impressive local landmark. Parking is plentiful if you prefer to drive.

Flatts Wood and Percy Beck woodland walks in Barnard Castle are just two of many recommendations in the collection of maps and guides available in The Snuggery to help guests plan and enjoy a walking adventure in and around Durham. Add to this a couple of slimline flasks and sandwich boxes, a waterproof map case, ordnance survey maps for the area and a first aid kit and you have all the ingredients you need for a fantastic day out, whatever the weather.
And when you’re done, The Snuggery will welcome you home with a roaring fire and comfy sofa, not to mention a muddy boot tray!

The joy of walking in County Durham! That’s what we’ve discovered over the last couple of years, whether it’s over hill, down dale, through woodland, around the town, along the river or beside the sea. We thought we knew our own backyard but this has been a complete revelation! And there’s still so much to explore.

So, this January we’ve renewed our odyssey across the county via The Teesdale Way, starting with the Low Coniscliffe to Darlington (Blackwell Grange Golf Club) leg. Can’t think of a nicer thing to do on a cold, bright winter's afternoon and it was great to see Darlington from a different perspective.

Know what we'll be doing over the next few weeks. Especially got my eye on the bluebells of Durham City's Great High Wood, the spring gentians of Upper Teesdale and the wild garlic woodland of Castle Eden Dene National Nature Reserve. Watch this space for photos...

Did you know Upper Teesdale in the Durham Dales and North Pennines AONB is one of only two locations in the world it’s possible to see the Spring Gentian?!

These beautiful blue flowers are best seen on warm, bright days from April to early June, as these little flowers will only open in direct sunlight.

One of our favourite haunts, for an hour or two or longer. There's always something new and beautiful to see on our ramblings, and always somewhere nice to sit over refreshments and food from The Stables Cafe. Hard to beat for a lovely gentle outing.

We all need a place to unwind 😌

Take time to sit, stroll, relax and enjoy the colours of spring in the Walled Gardens. We are open daily from 10am to 4pm.

Our outdoor seating and toilets are open and the Stables cafe is serving food and drink to enjoy outdoors.
