This is one of our favourite rooms here at Fingals—just look at that gorgeous vintage four-poster bed! 🛏️ There’s something so comforting about sinking into luxury linens and a bespoke mattress after a day exploring the local area. Guests always tell us they have the best sleep here, and we like to think it’s because we’ve made it as cosy as can be.

Fun fact: did you know four-poster beds were originally designed in the 15th century to keep out chilly drafts? Of course, we’ve kept the charm but left the drafts behind! And you’ll be pleased to know we’ve updated a few other things since then too… including en-suite bathrooms (no bed pans here!).

Looking forward to welcoming you for a peaceful stay soon. 🌿✨ Check availability here: https://fingals.co.uk/

Oh, we do look forward to the Crux Craft Fair in Rattery every year—it’s a true gem in our Devon calendar! We’ve been living here over 40 years, and this event just gets better and better.

From 22nd to 24th November, the village comes alive with the most marvellous creations. There’s something so special about meeting the local makers and hearing the stories behind their crafts. With over 30 stalls from talented Southwest artisans, you’ll find everything from gorgeous ceramics and jewellery to woven scarves, leather goods, prints, woodwork, chocolates—you name it! Each piece is handmade, and the quality is just wonderful.

And we must say, we’re especially excited about this year’s Crux Cafe, run by a lovely new husband-and-wife team, Charlie and Dan from The Cellar Door. They’ll be cooking up delicious food using locally sourced ingredients, even some from their own smallholding! We’ll certainly be stopping in for a bite.

It’s free to get in, and there’s parking too, so it’s easy for anyone to pop along. A perfect chance to shop for those one-of-a-kind Christmas gifts and support our local community at the same time. We wouldn’t miss it, and we hope to see you there too!

If you’re staying at Fingals, a trip to Haytor on Dartmoor is an absolute must! Just a scenic 40-minute drive from us, Haytor offers some of the most breathtaking views of the Devon landscape, and there’s nothing quite like standing atop this granite outcrop, gazing over the wild beauty of Dartmoor. It’s one of those places that feels like stepping into another world – ancient, untamed, and utterly magical.

Historically, Haytor has been a hub of activity for centuries. During the 19th century, it was a key site for granite quarrying, and you can still see the remains of the old tramway that once carried this precious stone down to the Stover Canal. The granite from Haytor was used in famous constructions like London Bridge! Imagine that – this rugged landscape has left its mark on the capital.

But one of the highlights of any visit to Dartmoor has to be the chance of seeing the Dartmoor Ponies. These charming little ponies have roamed the moors for centuries, perfectly adapted to the often harsh conditions of Dartmoor. They’re wild, but friendly, and if you’re lucky, you might spot a herd grazing near Haytor. Just remember, as tempting as it is, the ponies are best admired from a respectful distance – no feeding!

Haytor also offers fantastic walking trails for all abilities, so whether you're after a gentle stroll or a more energetic hike, you'll find something to suit. It’s the perfect spot for a picnic too – just pack some Devon treats, sit back, and soak in the views.

So, if you're staying at Fingals and want to truly experience the spirit of Dartmoor, Haytor should be high on your list. Don’t forget your camera – this is a place you’ll want to remember! 📸🐴

For those of you with a love of castles, we know of a hidden gem that’s sure to capture your imagination – Berry Pomeroy Castle. Just a 15-minute drive from Fingals, this atmospheric ruin is perfect for a day trip, especially if you're staying in the South Hams and want to dive into a bit of local history.

Berry Pomeroy Castle is not your typical picture-perfect fortress. Nestled in a wooded valley, this partially ruined castle has all the intrigue of a medieval stronghold and the romance of a Tudor mansion that was never fully completed. The castle dates back to the late 15th century, built by the Pomeroy family before being sold to the Seymours (yes, as in Jane Seymour, Henry VIII’s third wife!).

But here’s where it gets really interesting – Berry Pomeroy is said to be one of England’s most haunted castles. Legends of ghostly apparitions and mysterious happenings swirl around the ruins, particularly in the dungeons and the old tower. So, if you’re brave enough, you might just encounter the legendary White Lady or the Blue Lady during your visit… 👻

The castle’s history is as fascinating as its architecture. It’s a rare example of a Norman castle that was expanded into a grand Tudor mansion, and today you can still wander through its crumbling towers and atmospheric rooms. With ivy-clad walls and a sense of mystery in the air, it’s the perfect spot for castle lovers to explore and imagine what life was like centuries ago.

Have you ever been to Totnes – one of Devon’s quirkiest and most charming market towns? A mere 20-minute drive from Fingals, or you could make a day of it and take a leisurely bike ride through the rolling countryside, Totnes is a place where history and culture blend seamlessly with modern life.

This ancient town, perched on the banks of the River Dart, is a treasure trove of delights. History buffs will enjoy exploring Totnes Castle, a classic Norman motte-and-bailey structure with fantastic views over the town and river. Founded soon after the Norman Conquest, the castle still stands tall, watching over the town’s cobbled streets. Totnes also has its own curious legend – according to local myth, Brutus of Troy (the town’s legendary founder) stepped foot here in the 12th century BC, making it the first settlement in Britain! Quite a claim, but one that adds to the town’s charm.

For those who love a spot of shopping, Totnes is famed for its independent boutiques, quirky galleries, and a fantastic weekly market (held every Friday and Saturday). You’ll find everything from handcrafted goods to artisan foods – perfect for picking up a few unique souvenirs or ingredients for your next meal back at Fingals.

The town is also a haven for food lovers, with delis, cafés, and restaurant offering a feast of local produce and flavours. Don’t miss a stop at the Totnes Rare Breeds Farm if you’re travelling with little ones – it’s right next to the Totnes-Paignton Steam Railway station, so you can combine it with a delightful train journey! 🚂

Ah, the Dartmouth Steam Railway and River Boat Company – a journey that feels like stepping back in time! If you find yourself in South Devon, this is one adventure not to miss.

Imagine the gentle chug of a vintage steam engine as it winds its way through rolling green hills, along cliff edges, and over viaducts with the sea sparkling below. It’s a ride that would make any train enthusiast (or lover of stunning scenery) feel right at home.

The line runs for around 7 miles from Paignton to Kingswear, right on the edge of the River Dart. From here, you can hop on a ferry to explore Dartmouth – but don’t rush or hop off at Greenway (on the opposite side of the river to Dittisham) to explore Agatha Christie’s house and gardens! The views along the journey are what truly steal the show. Here are a few photos, including some aerial shots that show just how stunning the route is, hugging the coastline like a silver ribbon, weaving in and out of the rugged landscape.

Did you know the line was originally part of the Great Western Railway? It opened in 1864 and, despite modern advancements, still keeps the charm and elegance of the steam age alive. In fact, it’s one of the few remaining lines in Britain where steam locomotives are the stars of the show year-round.

🚂 Fun fact: The railway also features in several films and TV series, including Agatha Christie’s Poirot. So, if you’re a mystery fan, this might feel like you're part of a thrilling whodunit!

If you're staying in The Folly at Fingals, there's a perfect little nook waiting for you – our favourite reading spot!

We took an old rowing boat and repurposed into this comfy little hideaway, where any literary adventure is backed by the soothing sounds of the babbling brook.

For those looking to dive into the works of Devon-based authors, here are a few local treasures to get you started:

📚 Michael Morpurgo – His tales are rich with Devon’s landscapes and heart, from farmhouses to the rugged coast.

📚 Hilary Mantel – Though famed for her historical novels, Mantel’s connection to the South West adds a subtle richness to her settings.

📚 Philip Reeve – For something a little more adventurous, Reeve’s world-building is captivating, and you’ll be hooked in no time.

So, grab a good book, sink into the riverboat cuddle chair, and let Devon’s beauty, both outside and in the pages, transport you. Happy reading! 📚🌳

Staying with us at Fingals this Autumn? Well, you’ve chosen the perfect spot for a relaxing escape, and you’re just a stone’s throw from one of our favourite places: Dartington Hall.

This time of year, the whole estate turns into a painter’s palette of autumn colours—golden leaves, russet reds, and just a hint of mist lingering in the early mornings.
It’s only a 20-minute drive from Fingals, and trust me, the gardens are well worth the short trip. You can amble through the grounds, past that ancient yew tree—said to be over 1,500 years old - and along the riverside paths and water meadows, where the crisp autumn air brings out the best of Devon’s countryside.

Look out for events here in the 12C Great Hall, and there is also a cinema in a beautifully restored Barn.

Stop by The White Hart for a bowl of hearty soup, a mug of hot cider for something more substantial at The Green Table Cafe —both will warm you up nicely after your walk. If you’re here on a weekend, check out the Autumn Craft Fair, where local artisans sell their creations amidst the historic surroundings. Perfect for picking up a one-of-a-kind souvenir!

This rhino is not in any danger -- actually, the rhino is giving them a place to rest. When you see a swarm of honey bees on an object they are quite calm and not a threat. They do this usually when their colony grows too large. So, groups split up ( another one, 2 or even 3 groups) to find and establish a new nesting hive/s.

🌼 What a difference a flower bed makes!
Once a place of pipes and waste,
Last winter's work, a stark embrace,
A sewage plant in nature's haste.

But now beneath a bloom's soft glow,
A fragrant burst where flowers grow,
The hidden truth, no one would know,
Transformed by petals, lost below. 🌸
