Yesterday saw the opening of a lovely new art gallery on Brunswick Place in Dawlish, even the Dawlish Geese lined up to take a look!

🪿 A DAWLISH SPRING 🪿

One of my favourite things about Dawlish on a sunny day, is seeing all of the benches filled with people relaxing in the sun and watching the resident waterfowl waddling or paddling in The Brook.

We may be famous for our Black Swans, but we actually have a wide variety of waterfowl living here in the town centre, including geese or as I like to call them… the noisy neighbours!

Have you heard a gaggle of geese chasing after a Waterfowl Warden with a bucket of food? You haven’t lived until you do! 🚶🪣🪿🎶🪿🎶🪿

🌊 SUPER LOW TIDE IN DAWLISH 🌊

Yesterday lunchtime saw the waves receding all the way back to the end of the breakwater at Dawlish Town Beach.

I had a quick search through a couple of the gravel beds and was utterly delighted to find a beautifully rounded blue sea glass nugget, which will be added to the sea glass jar at Pilchard Cottage very soon!

Over the weekend, I noticed that The Dawlish Bookshop had a lovely new window display of vintage railway books, it looks like Jon might’ve had a re-stock recently!

We bought a few of these lovely Dawlish Railway books to add to our popular railway book collection at Pilchard Cottage, for guests to enjoy during their stay.

Next time you’re in Dawlish, make sure you come and check out the lovely independent shops of Queen Street.

🔔 OYEZ, OYEZ, OYEZ - THE DAWLISH CRY 🔔

Have you met our wonderful Dawlish Town Crier, Bob and his lovely wife and Consort Heather?

On Wednesday morning, under a clear blue sunny sky in Dawlish, stood next to The Brook, our spirited Town Crier regaled ‘The Dawlish Cry’ to the great delight of residents and visitors of the town, enlightening us with all the reasons why Dawlish is such a special place to visit.

Bob is appointed by Dawlish Town Council as an official ambassador for Dawlish, together with wife Heather their role includes welcoming visitors, opening new businesses and events and making public announcements.

Bob is a proud member of the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers.

The Town Crier and his Consort raise money for their chosen charity, The Strand Community Centre in Dawlish, if you can spare some change please do pop some money into the collection box.

In August, as part of Dawlish Celebrates Carnival, Bob and Heather will be hosting a wonderful town crier event, which Pilchard Cottage Dawlish is proudly co-sponsoring. It promises to be a really exciting day!

🦆 MAKING FRIENDS IN DAWLISH 🦆

Bert the Dawlish Black Swan is not known for his friendliness.

Over the years he’s chased away many Black Swans (his own grown up children) and even tried to kidnap a cygnet belonging to another mating pair on The Brook!

So imagine our surprise on Sunday morning to witness Bert allowing this lovely Mallard to dance circles around him without him batting an eyelid, perhaps Bertie is starting to mellow in his advancing years, although I somewhat doubt it.

✨THE DITTOS OF DAWLISH✨

Wow! I was privileged this morning to meet with the wonderful creators of The Dittos of Dawlish and to be given a behind the scenes tour of the incredible Ditto house workshop… where all the Ditto magic happens!

If you’re not familiar with the Dittos, they are tiny magical beings closely related to Elves and Fairies, who live in Dawlish in their gorgeous little houses and help to look after the town and the animals. They travel around on their flying scooters, solving mysteries and creating magic potions! ✨

🏡 In the next few weeks the remainder of the Ditto houses will be put up around the town centre (there are more than 60!) so keep your eyes peeled for the new trail map coming soon.

🧁 ROCK FORMATIONS & ROCKY ROAD 🧁

Dawlish is home to two famous sea arches; the Parson & Clerk and Langstone Rock, which are both clearly visible from the sea wall.

There is a third arch, which is less obvious and sits behind the Buddy’s At Red Rock kiosk, which is also part of the Langstone Rock formation.

After a little bit of exploring on Sunday and finding some lovely shells, we treated ourselves to a lovely hot chocolate and a delicious cake from Buddy’s 😋

*Take great care when close to cliffs due to instability and beware of the tides as you may become cut off.

🌹2025 DAWLISH REMEMBRANCE BADGE🌹

Over the last ten years, ex-serviceman Richard Hayward has designed beautiful remembrance badges with a Dawlish theme in aid of the Poppy Appeal, raising thousands of pounds.

The new design for 2025 is now available to purchase in businesses around Dawlish Town Centre, this year’s badge features a beautiful Black Swan and a lovely cygnet with a few poppies.

We purchased ours from The Old Mill Tea Room yesterday morning, make sure you buy yours soon to avoid disappointment, as these are extremely popular.

Did you know that Dawlish Museum is home to the famous bagpipes played by Bill Millin, the D-Day Piper? We highly recommend visiting when the Museum re-opens for the season.

🚆 STUNNING COASTAL RAILWAY 🚆

After spending time with the cygnets this morning, we walked from Dawlish Town Centre to Dawlish Warren and managed to see this lovely GB Railfreight Class 69 Locomotive 69005 (thanks to my brother for the heads up and information!)

Everytime I walk along the sea wall, I can’t help but admire the stunning geology we have here in Dawlish, the vibrant red cliffs are just glorious especially with the dangling green foliage and yellow gorse.

We also had a delicious hot chocolate and cake from Buddy’s At Red Rock and unexpectedly did some rock climbing too - more about that in the next couple of days.

Who wouldn’t want to walk here!

☀️STROLLS TO CORYTON COVE☀️

One of the best kept secrets in Dawlish, is a hidden cove with a lovely beach, just a short stroll from Dawlish Town Centre.

Coryton Cove is a lovely place to spend the day, with colourful beach huts, fantastic rock pools and plenty of space to spread out.

The Cove Cafe At Coryton Cove Dawlish serves delicious pizzas and cakes, so make sure you arrive hungry!

On Wednesday morning, under a clear blue sunny sky in Dawlish, stood next to The Brook, our spirited Town Crier regaled ‘The Dawlish Cry’ to the great delight of residents and visitors of the town, enlightening us with all the reasons why Dawlish is such a special place to visit. Bob is appointed by Dawlish Town Council as an official ambassador for Dawlish, together with wife Heather their role includes welcoming visitors, opening new businesses and events and making public announcements. Bob is a proud member of the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers. The Town Crier and his Consort raise money for their chosen charity, The Strand Community Centre in Dawlish, if you can spare some change please do pop some money into the collection box. Alternatively, you can donate via the website - www.strandcentre.co.uk In August, as part of Dawlish Celebrates Carnival, Bob and Heather will be hosting a wonderful town crier event, which Pilchard Cottage Dawlish is proudly co-sponsoring. 🦢FOUR WEEK OLD CYGNETS 🦢 Four weeks ago today, the little Dawlish Black Swan Cygnets started to hatch and what an eventful first month of life they’ve had! They’ve kept our wonderful Waterfowl Wardens busy, who have saved them on numerous occasions from being washed out to sea. They’ve become little celebrities, posing for lots of pictures and entertaining large crowds of adoring humans, every day. They’ve learned how to swim and catch their own food and everyone who has come to see them has fallen in love with them! 😊♥️🐥 Here they are yesterday morning, feeding underneath one of the weirs at Tucks Plot, their little chirps are just adorable.
