The Factory Girls 🧵🤍

The “Factory Girls” of Derry hold an iconic place in the social and economic history of the city. These women were the backbone of Derry’s shirt-making industry, which flourished from the mid-19th century to the late 20th century 👔

Their legacy is not just one of industrial growth, but also a legacy of friendship, community and resilience. Whilst they mastered the art of sewing some of the finest shirts in the world, they also learned to jive, style their hair, share secrets, and, most importantly, build friendships that would endure for decades 💫

You’ll most likely hear us locals say “What’s the bars?” when we want to find out some news or “the craic”. Well, this saying came about because of the way the Factory Girls would bang the bars of their sewing machines when they had a bit gossip to share 🗣️

These murals by UV Arts C.I.C were painted in the Craft Village as only but a token to commemorate the women’s hard work and contribution to the economy. But, the mural of the women depicts the camaraderie among the factory girls - the deep bonds that extended beyond the workplace. A sisterhood 🤍

We braved the ice to take a stroll with local tour guide Mickey Rooney. He is a fountain of knowledge about everything that goes on in the city, and also a huge music and culture fan.

Spotlight event: Oyster and Stout Festival🍻🎼

A weekend of music and great taste as we celebrate the wonderful Lough Foyle Native Oyster and our totally unique Foyster Stout. Don't miss NI’s first and only oyster & stout festival.

Join Fairley’s Flavours at one of his upcoming cookery classes! Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned chef, you'll learn new tips, tricks, and recipes to impress in the kitchen.

Upon arrival, you will be invited to make your own chacuterie board, including local produce from dart mountain cheese 🧀

After, it's time to fire up the grill and get cooking your choice of ribeye steak or Foyle Bia Mara mussels* on the charcoal BBQ, as well a delicious sauce. To finish off your main, you'll be given some freshly baked bread and Broighter Gold Rapeseed Oil with a green salad to complete the meal 🥩
