Situated within the Snowdonia National Park, Penmaenpool is famous for its wooden toll bridge, situated along the banks of the Mawwdach Estuary and the famous Mawddach Trail that links Dolgellau to Fairbourne and Barmouth along the old railway to walkers and cyclist alike. The village is served by the George III pub, offering a fantastic menu throughout the day. After a hard day walking or cycling there's no better way to end the day than watching the sun set over the hills with a G&T from the cellar bar! The village hosts an RSPB reserve - Coed Garth Gell is one of the best places for wildlife in the UK, and is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. NEARBY TOWN
Nearest to the cottage is the historic town of Dolgellau, with bakeries, large variety of shops, cafes, banks, pubs, restaurants, supermarket, a handy cycle shop, leisure centre and large park. A beautiful town to wander around, it boasts over 180 listed buildings and retains much of original look and charm. THINGS TO DO
Walking and cycling routes of varying styles are accessible from the doorstep. The wonderous Precipice Walk is seen from the windows and can be walked from the doorstep via the wooden toll bridge - or a quick cheat in the car gets you to the best bit in no time at all! Heading to the coast you have the choice of the seaside resort of Barmouth, with its huge golden sand beaches or its smaller, quieter cousin of Fairbourne - both just a quick trip in the car or accessible completely off-road via the Mawddach Trail. Harlech Castle is a short drive away and well worth the trip - its cafe boasts tremendous views of Snowdon and serves fantastic locally sourced meals. Coed y Brenin is a must-do for cyclists - just a 15 min drive, with ample parking. The centre has an array of mountain bike trails of varying difficulty and a number of walking routes, with some suitable for young children and pushchairs. Horse Riding Trails are offered down the road in the village by Bwlchgwyn Farm, where novices and experienced riders are all catered for on mountain trails and beach rides all year round.
