Through his career, Nigel has helped hundreds of people to grow and develop through training courses and mentoring schemes across VolkerRail.
After interviewing Nigel, we learnt that his fascination with people’s reactions and acceptance of change inspired him to pursue a career in nurturing development, stating that his biggest motivation is being able to help someone reach their goals. Congratulations Steve McQuade on your 20 years’ long service.
Steve started his rail career as a platelayer working on the majority of the UK’s light rail tram networks. Today, he is a duty manager working on the Transpennine Route Upgrade project.
Steve says he enjoys his role because there’s always great opportunities for training.

We are delighted to be named as finalists in the Spotlight Rail Awards 2025.
Our signalling and telecoms teams have been shortlisted alongside our project partners Network Rail, Bam Nutall and CRSA, for the Acting as One Team Award for our work at Bradford Forster Square station.
The Rail electrification Alliance has been shortlisted for the Outstanding Project (over £20m) Award, for its work on the ECML Power Supply Upgrade project and Static Frequency Converters.
The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on 20 March next year, and we have our fingers crossed.

Today we are celebrating Ian Jones’ 20 years’ long service.
Ian enjoys his role as a senior lineman, which has seen him work on a variety of projects across the UK. He says his favourite project was the North West Electrification Project Phase 3, and supervising the wiring train.

George joined us after a career in the NHS, which saw him managing a diverse range of services and projects. He now works as a duty manager in our control centre.

George consistently seeks out challenges and opportunities for personal development and is excited for what the future will bring.

Kevin has always had an interest in rail, and his career with us has seen him travel across the UK with our Kirow crane and Beaver tamper teams.

Great Central Railway has created a video of our tamper, tamping track during an employee training exercise.
In the video, Harry Porter, maintainer operator for our Beaver tampers, details how the machine realigns the track to improve the quality, allowing for a smoother journey for passengers.

Today, we are celebrating Marshal Huffer’s 10 years’ long service.
Marshal joined us as a trainee signalling designer, before moving into project engineering, which now sees him working on the Cumbrian Coast Signal Renewals project.
Marshal said that a highlight of his career was completing his FdEng in Railway Engineering at Sheffield Hallam University, and he is now working towards becoming a contractor responsible engineer.
Well done Marshal.

Working in rail can lead to a long and rewarding career, with many of our employees celebrating 10, 20, 30 and even 40 years with us.
Tom Willett joined us as an apprentice track engineer in 2014, and has spent the last decade travelling the country to work on some of our biggest projects including Stoke Gifford intercity express depot, the North West Electrification Project in Blackpool, and East West Rail.
Commenting on his career so far, Tom said he’s been on an excellent journey and is excited for the next 10 years. Tom also praised his colleagues for their help and mentorship, without which he feels he wouldn’t be the engineer he is today.
Well done Tom, it has been a pleasure to see your career progress.

Network Rail's Kirow 1200 has been named after Peter Walpole
We recently helped Network Rail recognise a colleague retiring this year by helping with the naming of its Kirow 1200 crane, which we maintain and operate.
The crane is now officially named after Peter Walpole who joined Network Rail’s in-house insurance company in 1996, and has been its chair until his retirement this year.
Network Rail named the crane after Peter in recognition of his great leadership skills and his positive mindset.

Today we are celebrating Mathew Stone’s 10 years’ long service.
Joining us as an apprentice engineer, Mathew is now a project engineer within the East West Rail Alliance; stating that this is his favourite project to work on because of the varying elements of construction involved in reinstating the track between Bletchley and Bicester.

Tom Taylor - lead test engineer
2024 marks 10 years in rail for Tom Taylor, who originally joined VolkerRail on an engineering apprenticeship in 2014.
After exploring the operational side of the railway with Network Rail, Tom rejoined us in 2022, and has progressed to lead test engineer, with ambitions to become a tester in charge.
Well done Tom, your career journey is a great example for others considering rail.
