Our new T8000 Tracked Colmars have had a busy month working with the TRU East Alliance installing new stanchions, using a rhino horn extension to increase the reach of the Colmar by three metres.

The machines have also been working hard at our Plant depot in Scunthorpe, where they renewed the ballast formation, replaced life expired switches and crossings bearers and replaced softwood sleepers with concrete sleepers.

Thank you to everyone for your positive feedback on the capabilities of these new machines and are team look forward to completing further installations in the new year.

Well done to Mac Medlock for successfully managing your first project.

Not only did Mac deliver his first project, but he also reduced the outage time required for delivering the Chester-le-Street mid-point track sectioning cabin into service.

This experience has taught Mac that collaboration is key to allow the smooth transition between the different disciplines and will take these lessons forward onto his next project on the alliance.

Great work Mac.

Our rail operations team recently volunteered at Beamish Living Museum to help prepare for their track renewals this winter.

The team were able to assist by bending several sections of rail using a hand pumped hydraulic rail bender to create a consistent and accurate curve.

The team’s support meant the museum was able to prepare for its track renewals programme in a much shorter timescale.

Well done to all involved.

Thank you to The PWI: The Institution for Rail Infrastructure Engineering for hosting its Practical Electrification Challenge, and welcoming two of our upcoming apprentices.

Events such as these are a great opportunity for those new to the industry, or those who have limited experience on site, to hear from industry professionals, and undertake a range of practical training in a safe environment.

Both our apprentices enjoyed this experience, saying it was a great way to refresh what they have already learned, and that it also gave them a chance to share knowledge with the other attendees.

Congratulations Steve McQuade on your 20 years’ long service.

Steve started his rail career as a platelayer working on the majority of the UK’s light rail tram networks. Today, he is a duty manager working on the Transpennine Route Upgrade project.

Steve says he enjoys his role because there’s always great opportunities for training.

Well done Steve.

Last month, a team of 50 volunteers spent a day helping to improve the playground of Bawtry Mayflower Primary School, and refurbished the school’s sensory room.

Thank you to the members of our civils team and overhead line team for taking part, along with members from RCE Civil Engineers Ltd, who together carried out de-vegetation works, cleaning, painting, and dismantling and replacing two sheds.

This was a great opportunity to provide support, and the team has received some great feedback from the school.

We are excited to be back at the Star Science School event this year.

The theme of this year’s workshop is 'Who wants to be an engineer?' Our team, alongside students from Hayfield School in Doncaster, will be on hand to run four activity stations, each linked to an engineering specialism, including, a safety quiz, building a KNEX railway motor and designing the best route between two stations.

Following each workshop, the students will also get to vote on which of the engineering activities they liked the most and which engineering specialism they would be most likely to pursue further.

We look forward to seeing all the budding engineers next Wednesday!
