Since 1999,

our short breaks programme has delivered quality escorted breaks for those seeking an independent way of enjoying a cultural break. Soak up the history of Sissinghurst Castle - National Trust Gardens this September. In the 1930s, the poet and writer Vita Sackville-West transformed the castle with her husband, diplomat and author Harold Nicolson. His wife's romance inspired Harold's architectural planning in her poems and writings. The national trust, which now owns the castle, is restoring it to Harold's original plans.

While Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson's influence may be visible in the gardens and around the castle, the castle's history, dating back to the 1700s, is fascinating! From housing French prisoners to being the home of the area's Women's Land Army, the land holds so much history.

We visit Sissinghurst Castle during our upcoming tour “Gravetye Manor Garden Tour with Lunch and a Fine Collection of Kentish Gardens“.

Don’t miss out on our 3 day / 2 night fully escorted break 15 - 17 September 2024.

A few images to share from our recent tour “Dreamy Dorset Gardens – Private Views - The Dorset Walled Garden & The Manor House Beaminster”. We were delighted to offer a unique opportunity to visit two private Dorset gardens that are rarely open to the public and received wonderful feedback from our tour guests.

Adam, son of Brena (Brookland MD), was our outstanding tour guide at Beaminster Manor - keeping it in the family! He was joined by family friend, Michelle Brown – garden designer, lecturer, silver gilt Chelsea medallist and creator of two borders at Beaminster Manor.

This August, we visit The Irish National Stud and Gardens, a famous horse breeding facility located in Tully, County Kildare. In the early 20th century, eminent Japanese landscape gardener Tassa Eida and his son Minoru designed a Japanese Garden here to symbolize the "Life of Man" through trees, plants, flowers, lawns, rocks, and water. These gardens are a living monument to the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures and are internationally renowned for their period design.

St Fiachra’s Garden, dedicated to the patron saint of gardeners, features water, trees, and rocks as its basic natural elements, creating a serene and beautiful space. Our visit includes a delicious lunch, as well as timed entry to The Irish Racehorse Experience and The Stud.

Soak up the history of Sutton Hoo National Trust, an important archeological site near Woodbridge. This is the site of several Anglo-Saxon burial mounds; historians suspect that Sutton Hoo was the burial grounds for East Anglia’s Royal Dynasty.

Most important finds are Mound 1, the ship-burial, and Mound 17. Both of these significant burial mounds escaped being robbed of their contents, many of which are on display at The British Museum.

After an introduction to the site, we can take a stroll to the Royal Burial Grounds, visit Tramner House and discover what led Edith Pretty to excavate her land at Sutton Hoo. Exhibitions exploring the world of the Anglo-Saxons, featuring replica and original objects discovered at Sutton Hoo, tell the story of this fascinating and important site.

Refreshments can be purchased in the cafe and there is a gift shop selling books, second hand books and a unique range of Anglo Saxon inspired products.

Enjoy a visit to Sutton Hoo during our upcoming tour “Discovering Suffolk from Coast to Countryside, Houses and Gardens”.

🌼 Glemham Hall 🌼 This red brick mansion, originally of the Elizabethan period, was built (around 1560) by the de Glemhams, a family which took its name from Great (Magna) and Little (Parva) Glemham. Considerable structural changes were made to the Hall between 1712 and 1722, giving it an overall Georgian façade.

We will be guided around most of the Hall, from the ground floor right up to the largely untouched servant quarters in the attics, where Elizabethan elements can still be seen, by family member Lavinia Wells. Lavinia will provide an engaging talk covering art, historical events, previous occupants and what it was like to grow up on a country estate. She is a wonderful host with an abundance of tales to tell from spending time with family here at Glemham. The gardens feature a stunning walled rose garden, herbaceous garden, an avenue of Irish Yews and a summerhouse. Wooden benches dotted here and there encourage you to sit back, relax and enjoy these beautiful spaces.

Enjoy a private visit to Glemham Hall, with a tour of the house and a stroll in the glorious gardens during our upcoming tour “Discovering Suffolk from Coast to Countryside, Houses and Gardens”.

🌼Discovering Suffolk from Coast to Countryside, Houses and Gardens 🌼 This is a repeat of our very successful tour in 2023! Brookland clients loved the diversity of the programme which has been carefully designed to offer a snapshot of Suffolk that covers wide ranging interests - art and architecture, archaeology, glorious gardens, military history, marine conservation and wildlife.

Join us as we explore some of the prettiest villages in the heart of Suffolk where pastel-coloured thatched cottages contrast with the grandeur and fine architecture of the county’s historic houses. These include the picturesque wool towns of Lavenham and Long Melford.

Tour highlights include:

🌼Glemham Hall: this red brick mansion, originally of the Elizabethan period, was built (around 1560) by the de Glemhams, a family which took its name from Great (Magna) and Little (Parva) Glemham.

🌼Snape Maltings: one of the world’s finest acoustic concert halls that was converted from a 19th-century malthouse. It has been given Grade II* listing by the government.

🌼Lavenham: we explore this historic wool town and admire the fine architecture of the houses and churches which can be credited to the wealth amassed as a result of the woollen cloth industry, dating back to the 13th century.

🌼Long Melford: its two-and-a-half-mile main street is the longest in England with many interesting and historic buildings including a delightful row of houses

🌼Sutton Hoo National Trust: an important archeological site near Woodbridge. This is the site of several Anglo-Saxon burial mounds; historians suspect that Sutton Hoo was the burial grounds for East Anglia’s Royal Dynasty.

🌼Orford for our private tour of the Orford Ness. This will include areas which are off limits to visitors on a normal open day and will afford fantastic photo opportunities.

🌸🌸🌸 Limited Edition Day Tour Featuring Two Dreamy Private Dorset Gardens, Tuesday 18th June 2024 🌸🌸🌸

We are delighted to offer a unique opportunity to visit two private Dorset gardens that rarely open to the public.

🌸 The Dorset Walled Garden: This private garden near Sydling St Nicholas (Dorchester) is set in a large chalk downland valley, within an AONB. The garden's plans were first laid out by Simon Johnson when the current owners arrived. They were further developed by Isabel and Julian Bannerman whose brief was to romanticise and soften the garden with their romantic, blousy, characteristic style of planting, with a focus on scent.

🌸 The Manor House, Beaminster where the owner has kindly agreed for us visit her private garden. Tucked into the centre of Beaminster, a picturesque, little- changed Dorset town, The Manor House sits surrounded by well-kept lawns, C18th cascades, rockwork and horseshoe lake, and a formal walled garden designed by Lesley Cooper.

£95pp including private garden entries, tour and refreshments at the Dorset Walled Garden. Light lunch in Beaminster (Ploughman’s or similar).

We depart from Romsey/Potters Heron Hotel, Wi******er, Stockbridge and Salisbury.

🌿 Discover the Timeless Beauty of Hestercombe Gardens! 🌺 On route to our upcoming tour, “Gardens of North Devon and Somerset with Sue Fisher Featuring RHS Garden Rosemoor in Springtime”, we stop at Hestercombe’s exquisite Gardens.

Spanning four centuries of garden design across fifty acres, Hestercombe Gardens is a true testament to the enduring legacy of its storied past.

First mentioned in an Anglo-Saxon charter of 854, Hestercombe has been intricately woven into the fabric of history. For over 480 years, it remained under the continuous ownership of the Warre family, a testament to their enduring connection to the land.

In 1903, a new chapter began as the Hon Edward Portman, his grandson, and Hon Mrs. Portman commissioned the renowned Sir Edwin Lutyens to craft a new formal garden, complemented by the exquisite planting schemes of Gertrude Jekyll. Today, Hestercombe's Formal Garden stands as a pinnacle of their collaboration, a masterpiece of timeless beauty.

Despite changes in ownership over the years, Hestercombe's legacy endured. In 2003, the gardens found new custodianship under the Hestercombe Gardens Trust, marking a pivotal moment in the preservation of its historic landscape.

In a landmark moment in September 2018, the Hestercombe Gardens Trust secured an additional 320 acres of land, thanks to a grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund. This acquisition ensured the preservation of Hestercombe's world-class, Grade 1 heritage landscape, gardens, and buildings for future generations to cherish.

Today, Hestercombe Gardens stands as a living testament to the enduring beauty of nature and the dedication of those who have lovingly preserved its legacy for centuries.

This April, we enjoy a 3-night stay at The Feathers Hotel, an iconic building in Ludlow. The oldest part of the Feathers, including the world-famous timber facade, was built in 1619 (during the reign of King James I) by Rees Jones, a successful attorney in the town who had frequently appeared before the Council of the Marches, which from 1536 until 1689 was situated in Ludlow making the town in effect the capital of Wales. The real Feathers Hotel, Ludlow is located at the heart of the ancient market town of Ludlow, where there are excellent craft and antique shops and a wealth of historic buildings, all within easy walking distance.

Stokesay Court is a remarkable late-Victorian survival set within extensive grounds in the rolling South Shropshire countryside, with panoramic views across to Ludlow and the Clee Hills. It was built for a wealthy Victorian manufacturer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, who had made his fortune in the glove making business in partnership with the Dent brothers. Designed by Thomas Harris, the house was at the cutting edge of technology when it was completed in 1892, only six months before owner John Derby Allcroft's death. The landscaped gardens and grounds contain a fountain, grotto, woodland walks and a series of pools connected by cascades, rills and steps.

Stokesay Court features within our upcoming tour: Ludlow and Welsh Border Castles, Houses and Gardens with Private Views and Expertly Escorted by Julian Humphrys.
