A little insight into this beautiful little building 👏👏

Relic of our working class rural past. This was the village Reading Room, most villages had them from around the mid 1850s. Reading rooms were originally imposed upon the working classes mainly by the church and also others of wealth - landowners.

This is where men would go to read newspapers and literature, to give the working man access to both ‘relatively’ immediate information about the contemporary world and to the past. Women were not allowed into these places

This beauty is in West Stafford, Dorset. You don’t often see them with their original name which indicates their past life but (I know of only three locally, Kings Stag, Winterborne Whitechurch and one in Weymouth and one in Shedfield, Hampshire) the buildings are still with us, many evolved into the village hall.
