A night under the stars on the Makgadikgadi Salt Pan, Botswana, is like being in a real-life planetarium.

A five-hour drive from Leroo La Tau lodge, or 30-minutes by helicopter, you can sleep out in the middle of the Naxi Pans which feel like they stretch out forever in front of you.

You'll be cooked a traditional bush dinner, which is served round an open fire with drinks as we watch the sun set over the pans, which is spectacular. Then when it gets dark, the stars come out. There’s no light pollution, so you can see the milky way and just billions of stars above you, so bright you feel like you could almost touch them.

Today marks Freedom Day in South Africa - commemorating the first democratic elections held in 1994.

Learn about apartheid in South Africa on a Walk to Freedom tour, where you'll hear Nelson Mandela’s story on Robben Island (pictured) and visit the townships where residents were gravely affected by the segregation. You'll have the opportunity to tour the prison, now a museum, and see Nelson Mandela’s cell, representing an important moment in South Africa’s history.

On the tour, you'll visit several townships, an experience which many people find eye-opening, but always say afterwards they cherish meeting the real people of South Africa.

While some are more immersed in the culture and language than others, we can give you a head start on a few helpful phrases. Japanese culture generally values politeness and effort, so attempting to speak the language, even if it's just basic greetings or expressions, is often seen as a positive gesture.

Run, don't walk. Our small group tours still have some availability this summer.

Nothing says safari like Kenya, and July and August are the country's peak safari months. You could be heading to the Maasai Mara at the height of the Great Migration, or perhaps you'll take to the skies on an otherworldly hot hair balloon safari at sunrise.

Our small group safaris still have some peak-season availability and prices include tips, park fees and international flights. Head out on game drives with an insightful guide in a 4x4 with a maximum of 6 people per vehicle, which means a guaranteed window seat to watch the action unfold. We suggest booking this month to secure your spot before these tours sell out:

Cheetah Safari, Kenya, from £4825pp - The Cheetah Safari is our most popular safari itinerary, covering a wide area and showcasing the very best of Kenya including travelling north to Samburu, visiting the Chimpanzee and Rhino Sanctuary at Ol Pejeta and the world-famous Maasai Mara.

Taste of Kenya, from £3950pp - This is a wonderful introduction to Kenya on this classic taster safari. This is a short 5-night safari, ideal for those looking for a safari and beach itinerary.

Big Five Safari, Kenya, from £2975pp - The Big Five Safari is a short, value-for-money itinerary. You’ll visit the wilderness of Tsavo West, followed by Amboseli, with its dramatic backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro.

This week is International Dark Sky Week - which celebrates the beauty of the night sky while promoting awareness about light pollution. There is a focus on preserving natural darkness for astronomy, wildlife, and human health.

Globally, the International Dark Sky Places (IDSP) certifies communities, parks, and protected areas around the world that preserve dark sites through responsible lighting policies and public education. NamibRand has some of the best Dark Sky Reserves on the planet, and you won't need a telescope to be wowed by the planetarium-worthy night sky.

The area was the second place in the world to be designated a Gold Tier International Dark Sky Reserve and its protectors work hard to keep the area pristine. Lodges celebrate the night skies with open-air stargazing suites and night tours where an expert will point out the planets and constellations.

Sinking into Cape Cadogan in Cape Town's trendy Kloof Street after a day's sightseeing is like stepping into a warm, luxurious bath. There's an air of Oscar Wilde amidst its Georgian listed buildings and ornate clove-green interiors and dipping your toes into its courtyard pools, glass of wine in hand, is almost a necessity.

Consider any one of its staff your savvy local friend looping you into which neighbourhood store or gallery you should pop by, or booking you the last table at that 'must try' restaurant, they'll even arrange a sunrise breakfast for you atop Signal Hill.

We guarantee it only takes a few days here to feel like a local. Find out more > https://www.kuoni.co.uk/alfredand/ideas/the-cool-factor-of-cape-cadogan/

Today Holi Festival, also known as the Festival of Colours, is being celebrated in India. Across the nation streets will pulsate with energy as people of all ages come together and douse each other with vibrant powdered pigments. Here are some of our favourite facts about this famously colourful festival:

The festival has its origins in ancient Hindu mythology, particularly in the legends of Prahlad and Holika, symbolising the victory of good over evil.

Holi is marked by the throwing and smearing of colourful powders and water, creating a rainbow of hues in the streets and parks.

One of Holi's significant aspects is its role in promoting social harmony as people from all walks of life come together to celebrate.

Holi typically falls in March, marking the arrival of spring. It's also associated with agricultural traditions, celebrating the season's bounty and the onset of warmer weather.

Since adding it to our new KwaZulu-Natal and Wilderness Beach suggested itinerary we're all a little bit in love with Thonga Beach Lodge in South Africa's remote iSimangaliso Wetland Park. If you're looking for something completely off grid this is it.

Stranded on a solitary beach you're steps to the ocean, surrounded by rambling dunes and milkwood trees but ensconced in oh such an elegant abode. Boma huts with bamboo lanterns, dashes of duck-egg blue, wooden walkways and beanbags to sink into with espresso martinis in hand.

When can we go?!

One of our favourite game reserves in South Africa's Eastern Cape is the family-owned private Kariega Game Reserve. Set in 11,500 hectares of African wilderness you'll not only get to spot the Big Five on bushwalks and game drives but with two dramatic river valleys - the Kariega and the Bushmans - canoeing, river fishing and beach trips by boat are also part of life here.

The five safari lodges - Main Lodge, Settlers Drift, River Lodge, Ukhozi Lodge and The Homestead will each give you a unqiue perspective and a warm welcome.

Sipping sundowners from one of these spots after an exhilarating day in the bush is hard to beat.
