If you want a child/ family friendly holiday - have you considered a cruise?

If not, why not?

My 4 year old son has been incredibly lucky to have been on 4 cruises so far and he loves them ... almost as much as us grownups! From experience, I can speak about P&O and Marella cruises, but there are plenty of other cruise lines offering family friendly cruising too. I even ventured onto P&O's Iona last August with just me and Monty as a pre-school treat and I'm sure travelling on a cruise from the UK was by far the easiest option as a solo parent.

So, why do I think cruising with kids is the future?

1. If you're cruising from the UK, there are no airports to deal with-just one stress taken away already You also have no luggage limits, so if you need to bring extra items for the cabin - for example a potty (or in our case so many cuddly toys) - you don't need to worry!
2. The ship is contained, extra safe and there are always members of staff around.
3. Even if you've got a picky eater, restaurants all have child menus and on P&O, there's a kids’ tea every evening at 5pm with so many child friendly options to choose from, including the all-important ice cream!
4. Kids activities-from soft play to mini golf (ship dependent), there's a huge ship to explore.
5. Swimming pools – child friendly pools to help wear your little ones out
6. THE BIGGIE … Kids clubs! On the last P&O cruise I did, there were at least 2 kids club sessions a day - afternoon and evening, with mornings added too on sea days. So you get to drop your little one off at an age appropriate club with fully vetted staff ready and willing to give you some time to yourself. Evening sessions run from 6pm and you're asked to collect by 10.45 – giving you time to have dinner, catch a show or enjoy a cocktail or two.

The weather has taken a turn ... it's cold - you might be de-icing the car every morning or snow might even have settled- are you dreaming of warmer climes?

Did you know there are plenty of cruises you can go on in the winter?
If you're short on time but you're still craving some winter sun, there are fly-cruise options just for you - the most popular are the Canary Islands and the Caribbean. Just imagine waking up to different sun-kissed beaches or the turquoise ocean stretching out before you.

Southampton's just up the road though and if the idea of airports isn't floating your boat (excuse the pun!) then you can look at cruises departing from the UK - just pull up at the port, drop off your unlimited luggage and check in.
