This is a fascinating film from 1952 on the New Forest exploring the rich landscape, people and forest traditions in the post war years. 18th century Agisters and pigs with rights to wander are just some of the ancient traditions celebrated in this beguiling look at life in the New Forest. Less familiar sights are captured, too, such as broom making and logging, forestry planting and sailing on the River Beaulieu near Buckler's Hard. No film about the area would be complete, though, without the famous Forest ponies – who are seen here in all their equine glory.

The film was commissioned by the Esso Petroleum Company in 1952, just as they were establishing a new refinery on the eastern edge of the New Forest at Fawley, but Forest Heritage is entirely concerned with the natural beauty and traditions of the area: ‘A place out of this modern world where simple pleasures are enough – a miraculous survival of pre-Norman England’.

Christmas/ New Year 2023 at Heathfield Estate:

This year, only the Coach House will be available to book as follows:

- 14 night package for £749 per night Dec 22- Jan 5 or

- 7 night packages for £749 per night Dec 22- Dec 29 or Dec 29- Jan 5

The Coach House will have Christmas decorations with a decorated Christmas tree with lights set up in the lounge plus a Christmas wreath on the front door and a special Christmas hamper ready for you in the kitchen plus Christmas theme books to read and DVDs to watch. The roaring log-fire will light up the lounge room, as a layer of frost covers the ground outdoors. Use of the Estate's Hot Tub will be available too. The Coach House will truly be a perfect place to stay with your family and/ or friends this Christmas. Adding to the magic of this festive season, private caterers can be available to provide festive menus for opulent dinner parties, afternoon tea, etc and we can help you plan out your time here with places to go, restaurants to book, farm shops to visit, and so on. From traditional Christmas markets to magical ice rinks, the New Forest is filled with a plethora of festive activities throughout this time of year. Tis’ the season to step outside in your winter warmers and truly embrace the crisp fresh air.

This riverside ruin is part of Christchurch Castle, one of few remaining examples of domestic Norman architecture 🏰

Entry is free and if you visit this Sunday, there is a volunteer led tour of the castle and Norman house giving more insight into this unique relic of architecture 🏛️

It’s Pannage Season in the New Forest so there are many pigs out roaming looking for acorns to eat.

🐷 Pannage season officially starts today (11 Sept), so you may start to see pigs out in the New Forest.

Pannage sees commoners practise their 'right of mast' by turning pigs out each autumn for a few weeks. The pigs hoover up fallen acorns which are poisonous to ponies and cattle.

As with all Forest livestock, please pass wide and slow, and thank you for not touching, approaching or feeding the pigs.
