Together, the Fan Bay, Wanstone and South Foreland gun batteries made up the 540 Coast Regiment during WWII. Each regiment would have its own badge or insignia and 540's featured a shell over the White Cliffs. Many versions existed during the site's operational history. Now, with this specially commissioned pin badge, you can celebrate the ongoing work of the volunteers, staff and partners, in the rediscovery and conservation of Fan Bay and Wanstone batteries and Fan Bay Deep Shelter. Badges are available in our shops at the Visitor Centre and South Foreland Lighthouse and at Fan Bay Deep Shelter, for a suggested donation of £3.00. Proceeds from the badge go towards our conservation work here at White Cliffs. Image: ©National Trust/Beatrice Hayley

Do something unusual this summer holiday... visit Fan Bay Deep Shelter, a series of WWII accommodation tunnels deep beneath the ground on the White Cliffs of Dover.
Designed to protect the troops serving on the Fan Bay gun battery from German shelling and bombing, the tunnels are a reminder of the conditions that had to be endured.
Your guided tour of the tunnels includes the two sound mirrors, one of the earliest means of detecting incoming aircraft and over 100 years old. Guided tours are available Fridays to Mondays starting at 11am with the last tour at 3pm. Booking not needed - tickets are available at the tunnel site. Image: ©National Trust Images/Megan Taylor

Until 2 September, the South Foreland Lighthouse tower is open for guided tours every day from 11am with the last tour at 5pm.
Discover how the lighthouse guided ships around the treacherous Goodwin Sands and hear about how South Foreland became the first lighthouse in the world to show an electric light in the 1860s. See the original mechanism that made the lighthouse flash and admire the view from the balcony.
Tour tickets are available from the lighthouse shop; National Trust members can tour for free but must collect a ticket first. Image: ©National Trust Images/Solent News and Photography Agency
