Today, we remember Edith Burvill and Harold Aram, both killed on the night of February 10 1943 by German shelling from the batteries on the French coast. Edith died when the Fan Bay NAAFI building she was in was struck, while Harold died from shrapnel wounds at Wanstone. Harold was repatriated to his home town, Nottingham, where he was buried in a marked war grave. Edith, being a civilian, was buried in an unmarked grave in Hawkinge cemetery, near Folkestone. With Edith's family's permission, the National Trust Fan Bay Deep Shelter staff and volunteers purchased the grave site and erected a headstone to ensure she is always remembered. Our bookshop at the White Cliffs of Dover is named after her. Image: ©National Trust/Richard Meadows

These sites were the focus of an unprecedented land-based artillery installation during WWII, but were either demolished, covered up or left for nature to reclaim after the war. Thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the National Trust, generous donors, partners and thousands of hours of volunteer time, these historic sites once again feature on the landscape of the White Cliffs. Voting closes on 10 February. Please cast a vote for us! Image: ©National Trust/Isle Heritage

We're sorry... 😥Edith's bookshop will be closing for refurbishment from Wednesday 22 Jan for approximately 4 weeks. The floor has been deteriorating and we're going to take the opportunity to reorganise the shelving to improve the book display and storage. The book corner at the far end of the Visitor Centre will remain open. Please pause all book donations while Edith's is closed, as we have run out of storage space. We'll announce the reopening date here, so follow this page to ensure you're among the first to know. Image: ©National Trust/Twigs Lennox

📣Save the dates! Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 March are our National Lottery 'Thanks to You' days. This is where we say a big 'Thank You' to Lottery players, who made our project to conserve the Wanstone, D2 and Fan Bay WWII gun batteries possible.
Bring any National Lottery play slip or scratch card for a free guided tour of the D2 heavy anti-aircraft battery and the 'Jane' and 'Clem' 15-inch cross-channel gun emplacements. Non-players can still enjoy a tour for a suggested donation of £5. Normal parking charges apply - NT members can park for free. Site open 10.00-15.00.
We hope to be able to open our additional parking facility, which is close to the gun sites, weather and surface conditions permitting. Up-to-date parking information on our Website and this page - please check before you travel. More details in the link below👇 Image: ©National Trust/Clive Knott National Trust Archaeology
